What is Turf Grass?
Turfgrass has an array of definitions, all pertaining to lawns. Turfgrass, in short, is any species of grasses designed for residential lawns and certain sports arenas. Whether for a home or golf course, turfgrass is the lush green grass that blankets the ground surrounding various venues.
What is Turf Grass?
Most people equate turfgrass with sod, but there is more to turfgrass than just being a component of sod. There are at least eleven different types of turfgrass used when procuring the perfect lawn. Each grass favors either the warm season or cold season. If you are thinking about hiring a professional landscaper, then it is good to know what type of turfgrass will work best for the climate in which you live while making your lawn look magnificent. A few of the most common types of turfgrass include:
- Bahia grass – Renown for being a great all-purpose grass, Bahia grass is a turfgrass that thrives in warm temperatures. Usually you will see this type of grass used as lawn grass in the southern part of the United States as well as on various pastures. Where there is a lot of sun, this type of grass will thrive.
- Bent grass – One of the cooler season grasses that favors humidity, Bent grass can be used in sports venues. There are three types of Bent grass, all of which are primarily used for fine lawns and/or golf courses.
- Bermuda grass – Most often used across the southern continental United States, Bermuda grass is used to blanket the lawns of residences in warm climates. It is a drought resistant grass that thrives in the sun. Despite its name, Bermuda grass was imported from Africa.
- Kentucky Bluegrass – A favorite of lawn aficionados, Kentucky Bluegrass is a cool climate grass that beautifully blankets multipurpose lawns. Known for its rich bright green/bluish green color, Kentucky Bluegrass is a long living meadow grass used in pastures as well.
- Fescue grass – Mainly used in colder climates, Fescue grass is most often found in high-traffic locations such as lawns, playgrounds, and sports fields in the northern parts of the United States.
Other types of turfgrass used include: Buffalo grass, Carpet grass, Centipede grass, Rye grass, St. Augustine grass, and Zoysia grass. Turfgrasses can make or break the overall visual presentation of your lawn, so be sure when you do your landscaping that you choose the best type for your climate.
