Whether renting a car for business or pleasure, it’s a good idea to inspect the car and the rental agency before driving off the lot. These questions can help you choose the right car and agency for your needs.

  1. What documents will I need before I can rent the car? Rental agencies sometimes require a host of documents before allowing customers to rent a vehicle. These may include driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and proof of address.
  2. Can I rent a car without a credit card? A credit card was once required to rent a vehicle, but many agencies now accept other forms of payment. Without a credit card, however, you may be asked to provide additional documentation and/or a security deposit.
  3. Will the daily rate be cheaper if I book on the weekend? Many car rental agencies charge less for weekend rentals than for vehicles rented during the week.
  4. What are my mileage limitations? Renting a vehicle comes with a daily mileage limit, which may vary depending on how far away from home you plan to take the vehicle.
  5. What is the charge for exceeding the mileage limit? The rental agency will record the vehicle’s mileage before you leave the lot and again when you return. If you’ve exceeded the mileage limitation, you’ll be charged a certain amount for each additional mile.
  6. Am I required to purchase your damage and loss insurance? Car rental agencies offer insurance against accidents and theft, but if you already own a car, your personal auto insurance may cover any damages or loss to the rental.
  7. What taxes or fees will be added to the rental fee? It’s always a good idea to learn about all possible taxes, fees, and other charges before deciding to rent a car.
  8. How much fuel should be in the tank when I return the car? Policies differ between car rental agencies. Some prefer the gas tank to be full upon return, while others want it empty. Still other agencies will ask that you return the vehicle with roughly the same amount of fuel as when you drove it off the lot.
  9. What is the latest time I can return the car? Rental agencies usually ask that vehicles be returned by closing time, but some may offer an alternative if you need to return the car after hours.
  10. What is the charge for returning the car late? Unexpected circumstances occur, and you may find yourself unable to return the car before the time specified. It can be good to know the potential charge ahead of time.
