Coin collecting has been a favorite hobby as early as the 1300s, and today coin collecting remains a popular pastime for many antique enthusiasts. If you are just entering the wonderful world of coin collecting, use these tips below to get started on your coin collection today.

Pick Your Coin Collecting Genre

Coin collecting for beginners is much easier when a specific genre of coins is chosen. Then, the collector can focus on gathering information – and finding coins – within a specific era or type. With time, many collectors begin to branch out into other areas of coin collection, but to start with try to pinpoint the types of coins that really interested you and those that will fit your coin collecting budget – for example, ancient Romanian coins, Canadian coins or U.S. coins from the 1800s.

Research Coin Collecting & Research More

Once you find the coins you want to collect, your next step should be to research, research and then research some more. Not only will research help you to find out the types of coins included in the collection, but research will also reveal unique identification marks that will help to ensure you find legitimate coins for your collection.

If you are completely new to coin collecting, it is also important to learn how to grade coins. When you have a better understanding of coin grading, you will be able to evaluate fair prices on the coins and know which coins to pass on.

Take Detailed Coin Collecting Notes

As you research, take detailed notes and create an information file that can easily be transported with you on the hunt for coins. Detailed notes should include identifying marks, the types of metals the coins were created with, important coin grading info specific to the coins you want to collect plus average current prices and value of the coins. Include in your notes copies of images of the coins and images of replications or fake coins you need to watch out for.

Set Goals and Start Collecting Coins

Now you’re ready to get started. Set goals, create a budget and start hunting for your coins. Before you begin actually buying coins, invest in a few coin collection supplies too including protective covers, coin cleaners (if your type of coins are recommended for cleaning – keep in mind that some antique coins should not be cleaned), magnifying jeweler’s loupe and a safe secure storage area for the coins.
