Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, Griffith Lumber Company is among the largest employers in Patrick County, Va. The company produces millions of board feet of lumber and millions of stacking sticks each year. Griffith Lumber was founded in 1933 in Woolwine, Va., with an old sawmill and boiler at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The stacking stick operation began in the early 1960s. Griffith Land & Timber, a subsidiary of Griffith Lumber Company, purchases standing timber, wooded acreage and other property for developmental and recreational purposes. Griffith Land & Timber and its partners own more than 2,000 acres in Virginia and North Carolina.
