      The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System specializes in providing probation and pretrial functions in the country s district courts. The system provides a variety of services, such as medical care, employment assistance, and substance abuse and mental health treatment. It investigates and supervises persons who are charged with and convicted of federal crimes. It prepares reports related to the release and sentencing decisions. The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System interviews defendants and offenders. The system intervenes in cases of serious crime and alcohol and drug abuse. It reviews court, school, military, financial and employment records. In addition, the system provides training to officers in investigations, report writing and retirement planning. The U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services System maintains a court in Washington, D.C.
