The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers represents approximately 750,000 members who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads and government. It focuses on ensuring that members receive fair wages, have training programs, pension plans, dental and medical plans for themselves and their families. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has members in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Guam and the Republic of Panama. It was founded in 1891 and is a subsidiary of AFL-CIO, a conglomerate of more than 13 million workers in 58 member unions that work in virtually every part of the economy.
