      About Mount Peter Mount Peter is located in Southern New York in the heart of the Hudson Valley, just a short drive away. We are known for many things, like our famous Free Beginner Ski and Snowboard School, our great snowmaking and expert grooming, an awesome terrain park, our top-notch racing and development programs, and our family atmosphere. Did you know that Mount Peter was started in 1936 by Macy's Department Store to show off and sell their ski fashion? The mountain that started so many years ago as a savvy marketing tool has grown to be a cherished place for people to fall in love with winter. Mount Peter known as The Friendly One is the oldest operating ski area in New York State, and one of the few remaining family operated ski areas in the country. In the 74-years since Mount Peter has opened, many things in the ski industry have changed. A snowplow is now called a wedge, skis have gotten shorter and have names like Parabolic and Shaped, and of course, snowboarding has emerged. One thing that has not changed is the strong family atmosphere and sense of comfort that Mount Peter has created. Season after season, year after year, we see someone toting their children to ski or snowboard for the first time, and we find that they had learned to ski at Mount Peter when they were their children's age. Numerous times, at countless locations throughout the country, our employees have met folks whose ears perk at the mention of Mount Peter. Some reminiscing always follows an excited Hey, I learned to ski there! Mount Peter is a great place to hang out with friends, meet new people ( many a romance has begun on our slopes! ), and reconnect with family. And while the ski business is always changing, one thing will remain the same: If you've been a customer for years, or are a first-timer, coming to Mount Peter is now, and will forever be, like coming home.
