- General Info
- Established in 1909 with but nine members, the American Oil Chemist s Association has grown to more than 5,400 members in 108 countries. It establishes standards of quality among professionals in the science and technology of fats, oils, surfactants and related material. AOCS s first book was published in 1918 and the first journal in 1924. USDA Regional Research Centers were established in 1938. Members A.J.P. Martin and R.L.M. Synge pioneered partition chromatography and went on to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1952. The first AOCS World Conference was held in 1976. AOCS offers several categories of membership that include individual, corporate and student members. Each year it presents awards to recognize the achievements of individuals in the field. A Governing Board and when this is not in session an Executive Committee that interprets and executes the policies of the Board, run AOCS. It has its headquarters in Champaign, Ill.
