General Info
The Loudoun Literacy Council is a community-based, nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to improving literacy throughout Loudoun County. We recruit and train volunteers to teach adults, both native-speakers and speakers of other languages, to read, speak, write and understand English. For children, we provide early literacy enrichment for at-risk preschool children and children who reside in our local homeless shelters, while supporting their parents as their child's first teacher. Our classes and programs are available to all who reside or work in Loudoun County. For adults, we offer small ESL classes of various levels and at convenient locations throughout Loudoun County. We also offer individualized and small group tutoring sessions. All services are performed by trained volunteers from the community and overseen by our professional staff. For corporations, we provide Workplace Literacy Programs to employees which allow ESL classes specifically geared toward the vocabulary and customs specific to that industry. For children, we provide the literacy component in each Head Start preschool classroom in Loudoun County Public Schools. ( Head Start serves preschool children who live at or below the poverty line. ) Over 100 at-risk children are read to, one on one, each week by our Family Literacy Program Directors. Additionally, we train volunteers to perform bedtime reading to the children residing at in our local homeless shelters. We are also beginning a Motheread/Fatheread ( need the registered trademark symbol here ) in the Transitional Housing Program in the beginning of 2007. This program teaches parents to better read to their children and shows them how to incorporate literacy enrichment activities. It has shown to raise the literacy levels of the children as well as the parents. The Loudoun Literacy Council is the only community-based literacy organization in Loudoun County and has been serving Loudoun County residents and those who work here, since 1980. LLC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, a national literacy organization that certifies trainers and provides instructional materials and support. The Loudoun Literacy Council was the recipient of the Virginia Literacy Foundation's Outstanding Established Literacy Program for the Commonwealth of Virginia for 1999. Please use the links to the right to learn more about LLC's Board of Directors, community partnerships, and nonprofit status. The Loudoun Literacy Council was formed in 1980 as a resource for the Regional Refugee Resettlement Office. The Council's task was to provide instruction in English as a Second Language ( ESL ) to refugees who arrived in Loudoun County. The LLC was an all-volunteer agency until 1993 when it hired its first part-time administrator. An Ameri-Corps * VISTA arrived in 1994 and provided the LLC its first full-time staff. Throughout this period the Council has provided ESL, Basic Literacy, pre-GED instruction, and elementary computer skills to adults throughout Loudoun County. Since 1980, the LLC has trained over 500 tutors, who have provided instruction for over 2000 adult learners. In 1998, the Claude Moore Center for Family Literacy was added to the Council's programs. Through the collaborative effort of the Loudoun Literacy Council, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, Head Start, and Loudoun County Public Schools, literacy support services are being offered to 196 children and their families each year.
