The department s communication center translates emergency and nonemergency service requests into appropriate action and dispatches police, fire and medical services through telephonic, radio and data communication. The South San Francisco Police Department also operates a SWAT team that responds to critical life-threatening situations, including armed and barricaded suspects, hostage situations, snipers and ambushes. Located in South San Francisco, Calif., the department also operates a records unit that prepares court packages and computes local, state and federal criminal statistics.
