George W. Clay, Jr. Utility Operations Center works under the city of Shelby, N.C. The center offers water and natural gas services to the residential, commercial and industrial customers. It operates an electric distribution system with substations and serves more than 8,000 customers. The center s electric department features peak shaving generators that are used to reduce power costs during peak times. George W. Clay, Jr. Utility Operations Center also maintains a water treatment facility that processes more than 4 million gallons of water per day. The center s engineering department strives to improve the health and safety of the citizens, as well as works with planning department to review site development plans for proposed businesses and subdivisions. George W. Clay, Jr. Utility Operations Center additionally operates a marketing department that promotes the use of natural gas for homes and businesses.
