Founded in 1976 by 300 families, La Monta ita Co-op Food Market opened its first store in a community center on the eastern edge of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. This 1,000-square-foot store served the co-op well and by 1986 had a membership of 3,000 families and annual sales of over $1 million. Presently, it operates four stores in Albuquerque, Gallup and Santa Fe, N.M. La Monta ita's stores feature grocery, bulk, dairy, frozen food, deli, cheese and meat, natural living and produce departments. The stores offer online newsletters and greeting cards. La Monta ita Co-op Food Market supports local farmers and producers and extends grants for educational initiatives. La Monta ita Co-op Food Market has more than 13,000 members and over 100 full- and part-time employees.
