General Info
Xavier Soler, MD, PhD, specializes in pulmonology and sleep medicine and is the associate director of the pulmonary rehabilitation program and associate director of the http://ctc.ucsd.edu/. He specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic lung diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Dr. Soler is actively involved in clinical research focused on sleep disorders affecting patients with COPD, the physiologic effects of pulmonary rehabilitation and in evaluating novel measures of activity in chronic lung disorders. As part of national NIH-funded networks (ALA-ACRN and COPDGene), Dr. Soler is involved in studying new asthma treatments, as well as a COPD phenotype initiative that includes genotyping and state-of-the-art imaging techniques. Dr. Soler was recently awarded a grant from the ATS Foundation Research program for outstanding early career investigation. He will use this grant to research the disease process of obstructive sleep apnea and how it affects COPD.As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Soler teaches medical students, residents and pulmonary fellows, mainly on the subjects of pulmonary physiology, COPD, asthma and pulmonary rehabilitation. He is also a lecturer in national and international meetings and serves as a reviewer for several journals, including CHEST and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.Prior to his arrival at UC San Diego Health, Dr. Soler served as co-director of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and co-director of the Sleep Medicine Unit at Hospital Quirn Teknon in Barcelona. During his tenure there, he also directed the Tobacco Cessation Unit and the Department of Bronchology. During his medical training, he completed a fellowship in pulmonary medicine and formal training in sleep medicine and tobacco cessation. He earned both his medical degree and doctoral degree from Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona in Spain.Dr. Soler is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
