Tara Pundiak Toohey, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist who treats general mental disorders in adults such as depression, anxiety, as well as psychotic disorders. Additionally, she provides emergency psychiatric treatment for individuals with serious mental health challenges in the emergency room, as well as psychiatric services in the hospital. She also serves as consultant psychiatrist.Her research focuses on understanding and improving care for individuals with emergency psychiatric issues.Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Toohey was medical director of emergency psychiatric services at University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu. Dr. Toohey completed residency training in adult psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia. She is board-certified in psychiatry. She is a member of the American Association for Emergency Psychiatry.
