Ravindra L. Mehta, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist and director of clinical nephrology programs at UC San Diego Health. He treats patients with kidney disease (chronic renal insufficiency, end-stage renal disease, and acute renal failure) caused by all types of underlying conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, polycystic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, lupus, sepsis, and many others.Dr. Mehta manages patients on hemodialysis, on continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), on peritoneal dialysis, and those with kidney transplants, as well as patients who do not require dialysis or transplant.As a professor in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Mehta has directed several clinical studies in the management of patients with kidney disease. This includes comparing different types of dialysis in the treatment of acute renal failure (ARF), evaluating different predictive models for outcomes in ARF, investigating the role of cytokine removal by dialysis membranes in sepsis and ARF, and evaluating techniques for determining the amount of excess fluid in dialysis patients. He has also participated in clinical trials for the treatment of hypertension. In addition to his clinical and research activities, his dedication to educating and mentoring medical students and junior physicians has earned him several awards for teaching.Dr. Mehta completed a fellowship at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester in New York. His residency was at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, where he also earned his medical and doctor of management degrees. He is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology.An internationally recognized expert in dialytic management of acute renal failure with CRRT, Dr. Mehta presents lectures on this and other topics at medical conferences around the world. He chairs the annual International Conference on CRRT and is also the leader of the International Society of Nephrology Commission on Acute Renal Failure; and president of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative.
