      General Info
      Donna Hansel, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pathologist and internationally recognized leader in genitourinary pathology. As a pathologist, she studies cells and tissues from biopsies to provide a definitive diagnosis of disease. Dr. Hansel often works with oncologists to develop treatment recommendations for patients. Dr. Hansel has a special interest in urologic cancer care treatment, including bladder cancer, adrenal cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Dr. Hansel is chief of anatomic pathology at UC San Diego. Her laboratory aims to identify novel, therapeutic strategies for patients with advanced bladder cancer. Dr. Hansel's research includes strategies that target cell migration and invasion. Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Hansel served as a subspecialty pathologist at Cleveland Clinic. She serves on several pathology and urology editorial boards and participates in the Cancer Genome Atlas program for bladder cancer. Dr. Hansel is also a contributor to the World Health Organization and American Joint Committee on Cancer revisions on bladder and kidney cancer.Dr. Hansel earned her MD and PhD at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her residency and fellowship in urologic pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
