Dr. Vetters graduated from McCollum High School in south San Antonio. He was a two year letterman in football, co-captain and all-district his senior year. He was a three year letterman in baseball. He was president of the freshman and sophomore class and president of the National Honor Society.

While attending St. Mary's, he represented the United States in the Latin American Friendship Tournament in Nicaragua as a pitcher on the national team. He received the Bob Delaney Academic Achievement Award and the William Rex E.R.A. awards his senior year. He lettered in baseball four years. Dr. Vetters received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry. He graduated Magna Cum Laude. After college, Dr. Vetters worked for a year on his Master's Degree in Microbiology at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
