      General Info
      John P. Kupferschmid, MD is Board Certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He is currently the program director for the Congenital Heart Surgery program at Pediatric Specialists of Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Kupferschmid completed a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. Later, he completed an MBA at the University of Texas at San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Kupferschmid did his Surgery training at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also completed a cardiovascular surgery research fellowship with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in 1987. Dr. Kupferschmid did his cardiothoracic surgery training at Boston University Medical Center. He then completed a research fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery at Children's Hospital of Boston. Dr. Kupferschmid was clinical instructor of pediatric cardiac surgery at University of California in San Francisco, California. At Boston University Medical Center, he was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr. Kupferschmid was assistant professor of surgery and pediatrics, section chief of congenital heart surgery and co-director of the cardiac intensive care unit at Penn State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Since his arrival in Texas, Dr. Kupferschmid has served as assistant, and, later, associate professor and chief of the congenital heart surgery section at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. He was also chief of the cardiovascular/thoracic surgery section for Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital. Dr. Kupferschmid is a member of many professional societies, including the International Society for Adult Congenital Cardiac Disease, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics/Section of Congenital Heart Surgery and The Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society. He sees patients at Pediatric Specialists of Texas and Methodist Children's Hospital.
