General Info

BRIGHTON CENTER is a nonprofit organization devoted to supporting children with disabilities and their families, while educating our community on the importance of inclusion. The program was started in 1969 by a group of parents who had children with Down's syndrome, who believed in their children's abilities. These parents wanted to ensure that their children would have an opportunity to achieve their highest potential and founded the Brighton School where their children could learn and develop. As the public schools began improving the quality and array of special education services, many parents transferred their children to neighborhood schools. At the same time, early intervention became a national focus as parents with infants and toddlers with disabilities could not find suitable services. After Senator Lloyd Benson visited Brighton, he ardently supported national legislation which funded the delivery of early intervention services. In 1983, with a grant from the Texas Interagency Council on Early Childhood Intervention (ECI), Brighton's ECI program enrolled 28 children. Today, Brighton has expanded services throughout a five county region and serves about 2,700 children and families each year through ECI services, two inclusive early learning centers and family education and advocacy programs.
