- UltrasoundDuring the procedure, ultrasound energy is used to treat unwanted fat, loosening the cells from other tissues so they can be gently removed through a small tube. Depending on the number of areas being treated, the procedure can take as little as one hour or up to several hours.
- ChemotherapyWhen dermatologists diagnose precancerous lesions, they are most likely referring to actinic keratosis (AK), also known as solar keratosis. While AK is not officially cancerous, it has the potential to develop into more serious forms of skin cancer. AK is usually found in the outer layer of the skin, most commonly on the face, lips, ears, neck and scalp. It may cause the skin to become scaly, rough, red or discolored, and may be tender to the touch. Treatment options vary and are best discussed with one of our board-certified dermatologists. Common treatments for AK include freezing with liquid nitrogen, chemical peels, topical chemotherapy creams and laser resurfacing therapy.
- Radiation TherapyThe most common form of skin cancer, and thankfully the least dangerous, is basal cell carcinoma. It accounts for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S. Basal cell carcinoma grows slowly and rarely spreads beyond its original location. While this cancer is seldom lifethreatening, if left untreated, it can grow into underlying tissue and cause serious damage. Warning signs for basal cell carcinoma may include an open sore that doesn’t heal, a growth with an elevated border and central indentation, or a scar-like bump on the sun-exposed skin of the head, neck, chest, arms or legs. The most common treatment for this type of cancer is surgical excision. Up a notch on the danger pole, above basal cell carcinoma, is the next most common kind of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma. Like basal cell carcinoma, this cancer is generally not considered a threat to life. However, unlike its cousin above, squamous cell carcinoma, if not treated, may potentially spread to other body organs (including lymph nodes) and ultimately cause death. This type of cancer appears frequently as a red, scaling, thickened patch on the arms, legs, lips, face or ears. Ulceration and bleeding may also occur. Treatments include Mohs micrographically controlled surgery, surgical excision, lasers, or radiation therapy.
- BotoxThe most popular patient treatments in the aesthetic industry today are muscle relaxers—Botox, Dysport, Xeomin & Jeuveau. These products give you a more youthful and less-stressed appearance by relaxing the facial and neck muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines.
- Brow LiftLight and laser facial skin treatments will improve the appearance of the skin and may delay the need for a face lift or other surgical procedure. Many patients find skin treatments complimentary to Botox® Cosmetic and soft tissue fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse, and Silikon 1000. While significant tightening of the skin will occur with light and laser facial treatments, eventually a face, neck, or brow lift may be necessary if sagging of the skin becomes significant. For many, this will depend on family genetics and the level of sun exposure.
- Eyelid SurgeryRare complications of eyelid surgery include bleeding, infection, scarring, tight eyelids, dry eyes, double vision, blindness, and adverse reactions to sedation or anesthesia. These complications are extremely rare and can almost always be avoided with proper evaluation and treatment. Laser eyelid surgery offers fewer risks than traditional eyelid surgery. Typically, the only noticeable side effects are redness and swelling.
- LiposuctionIs considered by many cosmetic surgeons and patients to be the safest and most effective form of liposuction surgery. It’s a procedure where lidocaine is injected into the fat beneath the skin allowing for the fat’s removal without the need for general anesthesia. During liposuction, the fat is removed through a cannula which is inserted under the skin.

Her research has been published in national dermatology journals and she has presented at local and regional conferences. Her current research interests include the development of improved non-surgical alternatives to face lifting and the use of regenerative medicine within the field of dermatology.
- Laser ResurfacingAfter surgery, it’s important to rest with your head elevated at a 45 degree angle and with ice packs applied liberally to your eyelids for the first two days. If excess fat and skin have been removed, you should plan to take at least three days off work. After three days, light-duty work can be performed if it does not require lifting, straining or bending. After two weeks, all normal activities may be resumed. If eyelid wrinkles have also been removed with laser resurfacing, you should plan 7 to 14 days of downtime for the eyelids to sufficiently heal. If a laser peel is applied to the lower eyelids, some redness will remain for a few weeks to several months.

- DermabrasionIn the past, acne scars have been treated with surgery, dermabrasion, laser peels, soft tissue fillers, chemical peeling agents, traumatic needling procedures, and a host of other treatments. While these procedures produced satisfactory results, it was difficult, even in the best of cases, to achieve more than 50 percent improvement for severe scars and skin depressions. In addition, a great amount of downtime was often involved.

- DermatologyIs a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in cosmetic and laser surgery. Hailing originally from the Pacific Northwest, she completed her undergraduate degree in Neurobiology from the University of Washington and graduated with honors. She went on to receive her MD from Northwestern University in Chicago where she graduated Cum Laude and was awarded the Phi Rho Sigma Dennis award for outstanding clinical performance. After medical school, she moved to Columbia, Missouri to complete her dermatology residency at the University of Missouri, where she served as chief resident in her final year. She developed an interest in cosmetic and laser surgery early in her training which she fueled through scholarships to national meetings and preceptorships. Her early experience allowed her to develop her own cosmetic clinic during her residency—an almost unheard-of feat. - MicrodermabrasionExpert treatment from a dermatologist can often stop the inflammatory process that results in acne scarring. Treatment with topical and oral medications, lasers, light treatments, acne surgery, facial brushing, microdermabrasion and extractions can often stop the inflammatory acne response and prevent scarring. Sometime, however, even the best of care cannot prevent the acne scars.
