I am reading a lot of really hot and really cold reviews of this restaurant. I was there in December of 2010 at a table of 12 celebrating my cousins daughter's college graduation. My takeon Cap's On The Water is this: the food is not bad at all. It's good. It's not great, but good and you will probably enjoy the food. The service was friendly, but ...confused. I think that's what's holding this place back. It is not really well organized. One person took our orders, someone else brought it out and tried to match what she's holding with someone at the table. You have seen this before ""I have a grilled grouper with fries and slaw..."" then the waitress waits for someone to shout out ""Over here, that's mine"" and so on. You could just view it as a very relaxed, laid back restaurant, or be annoyed that it is a very confused one. It's a bit of both and mainly depends on your point of view. In the end one dish, a blackened grouper with rice something and slaw, couldn't be matched to anyone, so another fellow whose grilled grouper didn't arrive took the blackened grouper instead. And... he liked it very much. He could have insisted on what he ordered, but let it go. There you are. That's Cap's. The view of the intercoastal waterway is beautiful. I thought my meal, grouper with two sides and a cup of coffee, at $13.00, was reasonable. No regrets. On the other hand, neither am I counting down the days until I return... but I probably will.

On 03/15/09, a sunday. I decided to take my inlaws, wife and three kids to Caps for a late lunch. I called ahead and asked if the they had call ahead seating, and if woe could make the lunch menu. The very gratious waitstaff said no problem. as long as you are seated by 3:30pm.
We arrived @ 2:40 pm and gave our name at the desk. They said about a 30 min wait.
We grabbed their remote alerter and sat on the deck and ordered drinks and appertizers from the oyster bar.
At 3:20 we were seated..... at 3:50 We had to ask a passing waiter where our waiter was, and that we we given dinner Menus.
A hostess came over to explain that we should have known that they were in transition. We could not order lunch, and if we wanted dinner we could not order until 4:30pm.
Our Waitress arrived and appoligized that she JUSt arrived.. She said don't worry, after you order drinks and appitizers you can order your meal after 4:30. When I explained that we already had drinks and apps and wanted to order now she said SORRY this happens alot........I asked for a manager.
A managers rep named Blaze (?) said sorry for your timming. theres is nothing I can do. He had no interest that we were there for over an hour. We were hungry and had spent money at the oyster bar. He was happy to see us go!>>>Until I told him I would write a review on the internet. Jaw dropped, eyes widened and said I'll be wright back.
After 5 minutes and a real sour taste we got up to leave... On the way out he said he could put dinner order in early. WOW Thanks - - Went to Ssaltwater cowboy instead-Great

Great location, but otherwise terrible. Been there several times, food very mediocre at best. Service terrible - while waiting in the raw bar area we weren't approached or even acknowledged by a single wait person. People actually behind the bar worked very hard not to make eye contact with customers. We watched one customer trying to pay his bill, and he was ignored ! When we were finally able to grab a table in the bar area our selves, we had to buss the table and wipe it off. I think it would be much improved by taking reservations or at least having a call-ahead list. Its a terrible way to treat customers. Although I love the location, I won't be going back.

I have eaten at Cap's several times over the past year and it is excellent. You want to make sure to get there early (5-6 pm) or you will probably have a long wait, given how popular this restaurant is. The Florida gumbo is especially good, as are the appetizers and the Chimmichura Tuna. I would not get the Vanilla Grouper again-it sounds good on the menu but just isn't. Everything else has been great.
There are 2 outdoor bars (one at either end) and the drinks are superb. I would fight a wild animal for their margaritas and mojitos. The servers at the bar (and the restaurant portion) are very good and we have always gotten superior service. These people work their butts off to be accommodating and get you what you need. Cap's has a laid-back, fun atmosphere. It is exactly what you picture when you think of Florida. You can't go wrong with it. I really like the prominent outdoor seating also.
Cap's has the best view of any restaurant that I have eaten at in this part of Florida. The sunsets over the water are spectacular. The best part is that if you don't have a table by the edge of the water, you will still get an awesome view, especially if you go out on the boat dock. You could come here just for the view (but great food, drinks, and atmosphere sure don't hurt).
Go there-you will not be disappointed. Every time we have company in town, we take them to Cap's and every single person has loved it.

I would rather eat airplane food! I work for the airllines and the food we serve is more satisfying and tasteful than what was served to me. The bar service and drinks were great, but it should be considering they told us that there would be a 45 minute wait and it took two hours and fifteen minutes to get a table. Luckily the bar service was good otherwise we would have left. When we got our table the waitress was beyond rude. Lauren P was her name, so beware if you read this and still decide to go. My meal came out overcooked and when I told her of this, she stated that I should have informed her which I would have if it wouldn't have taken her 20 minutes to check back on us, BUT even that would have not cause me to give a bad review. The topper was her deciding to YELL at us when we were leaving to HAVE A GOOD NIGH!! while her and the staff were all together folding silver ware and lauging. OBVIOULSY at this point we grabbed managment considering that we dropped well over $100.00 and he did nothing! He said he would talk to her and that was it, did not try to comp any of our food or give us gift cards! I travel all over the world and eat at several differnet restaruants and I can honestly say that I have never had such terrible service and food that seemed like it came out of a box and thrown in the microwave!

I contacted this restaurant several weeks in advance to a law school graduation party I was hosting in which guests had traveled from several states to attend. While it is their standard practice not to take reservations, the employee I spoke with took down my information because we were such a large group. At that time I specifically requested that they contact me if there was any problem with accomodating my group so that I could make other arrangements. I called to confirm the reservation 1 week before the event at which time I was told by a very, very rude general manager that they had no record of my call from several weeks before. He basically insinuated that I was lying about my prior contact. I am currently stuck now with a large group to attend to in the same weekend as The Player's Champtionship where everything is already booked. This man did not apologize for the problem or even make an attempt to accomodate my group. I have prior experience in the restaurant industry as well. When ever something like this happens, it should always be restaurant policy to try and at least meet patrons half way. I am local to this area and have frequented Caps on several occasions. I was treated horribly by this man and as a result I will not be patronizing this establishment anytime soon. While I do understand the significance of the crowd on TPC weekend, its best not to alienate the very customers who spend money at your restaurant in the off season when the line isn't out to the parking lot. My only request was that even though they botched my party was that they at least grant me call ahead seating. I was basically told by this incredibly rude man who called himself a general manager that the best they could do was a hour and a half. There are plenty other beautiful restaurants here that would have been happy to have my business had I been told 7 weeks ago by Caps that my business was not appreciated there.

My husband and I were staying in Jacksonville for a conference, and when we saw the website for Caps on the Water, I was immediately drawn to the location and we decided to take a road trip to this restaurant during our stay. It was well worth the trip (1 hour each way from Jacksonville)- we arrived and were seated immediately at a table on the deck next to the beach- and we had not even made reservations. The restaurant has a real ""beachy"" feel- the tables are either outside on a deck underneath beautiful trees, or inside, which we did not see much of. The service was great, we were never lacking for drink refills, or waiting for our next course to arrive. We ordered the artichoke and cheese fondue which was delicious, and my husband had the raw oysters. For entrees I had the fried shrimp and my husband had grouper- we were both very pleased with our entrees. For dessert we had a warm carrot cake which was also delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant- it truly made us feel that we were ""on vacation"" even though I was at a work conference in Jacksonville.

A visit to this restaurant is definately worth every effort. The location is absolutely stunning. Tables are under huge trees right at the intracostal waterway in a romantic setting. The staff is top and the food adorable. They also have an oyster bar and if you have to wait for seating, just take a drink and wait at the pier looking as the sun sets.
I defiantely will take my friends down there.
