General Info
Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran is a member of the Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Established in 1891, the church was first known as the Swedish Lutheran Church Society. The congregation retained this name until 1915 when the name was changed to The Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church, and in 1922 to Evangelical Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1915 English was declared the official language for church services. The original white frame church was located on Alban St. The present day church was built in 1929. Building expansions were undertaken over the years to accommodate the needs of a growing congregation and the interior was remodeled several times to reflect changing worship styles. The latest addition in 1995 resulted in an accessible church with increased space for worship and fellowship activities as well as office and classrooms. Immanuel has always reached beyond its doors to the community with its welcoming hospitality. In early years, the church was strongly devoted to church missions and was known for its smorgasbords and bake sales as a means to support their activities. These traditions continue today in the annual Christmas bake sale where lefse and other specialty Scandinavian baked goods are sold.
