- Swedish MassageSwedish Massage is the therapeutic, manual manipulation of superficial soft tissues of the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia by the use of specialized techniques. Common techniques used are effleurage, friction, petrissage, vibration and tapotement. These techniques may include active and passive joint movements and the use of hot and cold applications (hydrotherapy). The art of massage therapy has been used in various forms since 2000 B.C. to promote health and healing. Today’s professional massage therapists must be licensed by the state, receive continuing education, and are required to have knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, record keeping, health and hygiene, hydrotherapy, and professional ethics.
