Since 1941 Galvanizers has conducted zinc galvanizing on the property. The galvanizing process involves cleaning steel items by alternatively soaking them in caustic solution, heated acid, and water. The cleaned steel piece is dipped in a fluxing agent (ammonium chloride) before being submerged in molten zinc. After the zinc coating is applied the steel is removed and quenched in water or allowed to air cool. Coated steel items are stored on paved portions of the site in the northeast yard (east of the office building) or west and north of the process building.
