I have been going to Bishops on and off for what feels like forever. I have to say in the past there had been some disappointment, but lately- I have gotten some of the best haircuts I've had in my life! It really feels like Bishops has stepped it up as far as training or who they are hiring. I have been just LOVING my hair! A+++ Bishops! Great value.
This place cloaks its mediocre services in loud music and cheap beer. Hoorray for pdx's unoriginal barbershop. Every time I get the bad idea to get my haircut here and stray from my usual place i get instead of a satisfying experience disgruntled employees, an average cut, and a free buzz from a few beers. Then comes the onset of buyers remorse when i realize the free beer isn't worth the bad cut. Thank god for the gimmicks-they'll get you every time. From a customers stand point it seems like they have a high turnover. I go in at least once or twice a year to give it a shot and always see new people working. Must explain why they need the gimmicks....?
I went to the Bishops on 21st on a recommendation of a friend. What a great place! I just moved here, and i am so excited that I found Bishops! I got treated well, a great hair cut and a beer! At least in this new city i found the place to get my hairs did. Thanks Jessica you were great!
Really cool joint. I stumbled upon this place looking for jackpot records - (p.s. they moved) - and walked in and signed my name and got a beer and a sweet haircut. It was pretty cheap too.
I drive in from Vancouver to get my hair done at Bishops in NW. I love those girls. They are fun and funny. The music is good, although the wait might be a little long. My hair cut might not be complicated but I dont go there just for the cuts. I have gone to those so called high class salons. I have never been more satisified just paying the 25 bucks and having a real conversations with REAL people.
I highly recommend Bishops to you and to all my friends.
I love this Bishops. Emily is one of the best hairdressers around. Veronica is not to sabby either. Both have done my color and both have totally ROCKED IT! I used to pay way more for much less. Never again! THANKS FOR ROCKIN!
I heard there is free beer, good music, a hip staff, and little wait times. I can say all is true except for the wait times. I went to the Hawthorne bishops on a Saturday and there was a hour and half wait. The wait was worth it and after my beer I didnt mind all that much. If you are sick of bad hair cuts or paying 50 bucks for so called good cuts , then go to Bishops its worth the wait!!!! next time I go it will be during the week. I hear the wait times are far less. Thanks Katie you know how to cut them hairs.... :) That guy at the front desk is pretty funny too. I have never felt more welcome .
I always go to Ken's for pizza and pass by Bishops. I decided with my wife to go there just for kicks. What a great place. Its not the kinda place I would normally hang out but the girls and the energy in there was really fun. I appreciated the low cost hair cut. Veronica, who cut my hair, was really professional and sweet. She caught me a bit off guard with her bright orange hair, but she was so nice that in a moment I didnt even notice she looked a bit outrageous. She really explained the whole process and how Bishops is an ala carte business. I was having so much fun that I had her give me a shampoo and a shave too.
I will be going back to Bishops. If you get the chance, see Veronica. She is great. What ever Mr. Bishop is doing he is doing it right.
I live in the neighborhood and go to my neighborhood Bishops and have been for about 3 years. Everytime I go in I am greeted with a smile and a beer. The hair cuts are good. I have seen Beth, Asma, Tiffany and Danny. They have all been great. If you are looking for a good place to go for a cheap hair cut, I recommend Bishops. If you are looking for a salon go there. This place is more like hanging with friends...
I went to a salon to get my hair dyed platnum. Well I left with sunflower yellow hair. I went on a friends recommendation to bishops on 21st. After a good consutation with Tracy she understood exactly what I wanted. She and I talked the whole time. She explained what she was doing and put me at ease. I was really afraid that I was going to have my hair melted off (yes, its happened before). She did the BEST JOB!
She was sweet and very funny. The recieptionist made sure that I had everything I needed. She even asked me what shade of platum i wanted. She was so helpful I loved it. Tracy you have a new client! I will be recommending my friends to see you!
Thanks Bishops!
Ive read the reviews. I don't know what these people are talking about. I love Bishops. I see Beth. She is great! Friendly and I always get just what I want. A good cut and good style. I have been visiting Bishops in NW for years now. I love the stylists they have working there. They always will to go the extra mile. Even stand in line for me next door at Ken's to get me some coffee. My husband and I always go to Bishops.
You should too.
Great people, great hair, great atmosphere!!!!! i love this place!!! went in, signed up, got a free beer, got the best cut & color, ever!!! thank you for opening your shop in the Pearl, now if the NW store is busy, i can go to the Pearl. Thanks Mr. Bishop
My last two visits were disastrous - sloppy and unfinished work, unpleasant barbers. It looks like this place hires friends or family and trains them for ten minutes before giving them scissors.
Your grandmother will probably give you a better haircut than these ""hairdressers"".
In the past I got a couple of decent haircuts here, so some of the employees must be competent, but they have certainly become hard to come by!
I will stop patronizing this Bishop's and try my luck elsewhere in the neighborhood. They certainly give Nob Hill a bad name. Oh Portland, when will you stop being so provincial!
My friend raved about Bishops and how great it is, and I do love her hair, so I decided to give it a try. It was the day before my 18th birthday. I wanted a cut and dye, but they refused to dye my hair without parental consent (even though I was going to be 18 in less than 24 hours)... So I was forced to get my mom to drop everything she was doing and come down to the salon and sign a waiver. I understand why they had to do this, but it started giving me bad vibes. I should have walked out and never looked back.
A few months before, I had dyed my hair with box dye; redish on top, black underneath. Well black dye is a pain to get out (that's why I went to bishops...to let the professionals handle it).
I asked the girls who were working if they could help me get to a really light color, and they because argumentative, forgetting the fact that it's MY HAIR and I should get something I want considering how much money I was going to pay.
After giving up on having light hair, they promised me they wou;d help get the black dye out... I was in that salon for a good 3 hours or so and I paid WAY too much for a cut I wasn't thrilled with and a color that did not do what they promised...They did NOTHING to take the black out, they just put in a different color that covered the black up for a month or two.
I got my hair cut and dyed again a couple of weeks ago, but this time I took a risk and went to Supercuts... I'm glad I did. Although the trim wasn't amazing, the color was MUCH better and the service was great.
So thanks for a whole lot of nothing Bishops. You should really learn to listen to what your client wants and give them what they want. After all, they're paying you more than you deserve!
After many random hair cuts in portland at various shops I finally decided to try out bishops. I didn't want to have to wait for my hair to get done I needed a freshen up very much so. In the past I have had hairdressers chop off all my hair when I've told them I am growing it out. I have had hairdressers dye my hair the color I specifically asked them not to, so at this point I'm jaded and nervous.
When I walked in I was greeted by hairdressers and a very charming boy at the front desk. I didn't have to wait very long, and they quoted me correctly on how long of a wait. Tracy did my hair and helped me pick out the perfect shade of color for my hair and skin tone. It was a very relaxing experiencing and though I may have not looked like the richest biggest tipper I was treated like I was. The boy working the desk made sure I was comfortable and offered me things to drink, and not just beer. He put my purse in a safe place so that no one would walk off with it after I left it out in the open.
Tracy always checked to make sure I was doing okay throughout the process, and offered stimulating conversation rather than discussing drama amongst other hairdressers as I often experience in other salons.
When finished I loved my hair. It was perfect, exactly what I wanted, and even better than I hoped for.
I get many compliments on it daily and always recommend bishops on NW 21st. I don't know about the rest, but this bishops seems to be doing something right. When I looked around at the salon all the hairdressers seemed to be very attentive and the clientele very happy.
The way they treat their employees is reason enough not to go there.
They only recieved one lonely star because it was required by City Search...
I have had many great experiences here and one not. My bad experience was when i was having my hair dyed by the assistant manager, it seemed like she had no experience and she didn't leave the dye in long enough so you could still see my roots. My favorite two stylists that work there are Osma and Beth.
My experience with Bishop's and anyone I've ever talked to that has been there hasn't been satisfactory. Some of their people are experienced but it seems like too many of them aren't. It's hit-or-miss. You may get a good hair cut one time, but then not the next and the stylist's schedules seem too different to keep up with them. You can't count on getting a good hair cut every time so I just don't go there anymore.
I went to this salon, and the girl that cut my hair seemed not to have enough experience and I saw the stylist next to me and she didnt look with much experience either I didnt truely loved my hair cut and my husband either plus there were some parts of my hair cut that were a somewhat chopped instead of looking like a smothly cut. IT wasnt terrible, but It wasnt professional either. I need to go somewhere else to get it done profesionally. I would have probably get something better in a cheaper place or tell your mom to do it. I payed $25 dls.+ $5 for the blowdry which I didnt asked. Its not expensive, but I was expecting to get something better. I wouldnt recomend this place, I dont know if someone at the salon would be an expert or if they have a standard on hireing their stylists, or if this place is more for men hair cut, but I didnt get a very nice cut. Also I didnt like all the pornografic photos posted all over the salon.
Living downtown I decided to give my local Bishops a try. I went into the location in SW. The wait was a little long (I went in around 3pm on a monday) but it was well worth it. I saw Kylie I believe her name was. She listened to what I wanted and was very easy to talk to. She's funny too, so that put me at ease. Everyone at the shop was friendly, and I'm really happy with my haircut. I will be going back!
