He is the techie of the group and spends most of the time designing. He specializes in logo design and web design. Joe also spends some of the time speaking with customers and helping them develop identities for their business. He understands the sign business and like Ben, sign work comes naturally to him. History of Diaz Sign Art Bill Diaz started Diaz Sign Art in March of 1979. Originally the name of the business was Diaz Painting and Decorating. The emphasis of the business in the first couple of years was painting and wallpapering. Sign painting played a minor role until the sign painter in Bill's hometown of Pontiac, Illinois moved to Arizona leaving a demand for this type of work. In 1980 Diaz Painting and Decorating had become a union painting business employing five with an emphasis on commercial and industrial painting. Bill did all the wallpapering while the others performed the painting, but a drop of large scale painting due to the recession of the early '80's and an increase in demand for a sign painter in the area, convinced Bill to drop the painting and decorating portion of the business and concentrate on sign making. Bill struggled the first couple of years--trying to get established--until a local businessman who owned a bus dealership offered to rent Bill the former sign painter's shop and promised work lettering school buses. The name of the business was changed to Diaz Sign Art. The sign business flourished from that point on, and Diaz Sign Art employed various people until 1985 when Mike Rodino came to help out. Bill and Mike worked together until 1989 when Mike left to open a picture framing business in downtown Pontiac called WallWorks. The demand for signs, lettering, pinstriping and murals from Diaz Sign Art was too great for one person, so Bill convinced his wife, Jane, to join the business. Jane was teaching art at the time and was reluctant to give up an occupation which she really enjoyed. Nevertheless she saw the need to help her husband. Late in '89 Bill and Jane purchased the shop which Bill had rented and a building next door to house the office and the newly purchased computerized sign making equipment. Bill and Jane have been blessed with plenty of work ever since, and by the way having two buildings sure comes in handy for a husband and wife business venture. Today Jane and Bill have been joined by their sons, Ben and Joe. Each member of the family has their own specialty, which has really helped the company grow.
