Awful!!! Will never go back and will never recommend. I have been in the business too long to know you never treat people the way they do. On top of it the owners and managers don't care. It's sad that the service could be so bad. It was one bad apple that ruined it for the whole place. Stay far away from this place. There are plenty of other hot spots downtown that treat their customers with respect!
Decided to check this place out and ignore the bad reviews about the horrible service. BIG MISTAKE!. This place has the WORST bartenders of any establishment I have ever been to. Our blonde bartender took forever to take our order, and was the most unfriendly person I have come across in the foodservice industry. Very nasty indeed. We were so appalled and taken aback by this chicks horrible attitude, we left the place after our first order, not even bothering to take one sip from our drinks. Of course the icing on the cake was when we were walking out after this initial interaction and this blonde bartender called my wife a fat C**T! Not just whispered it under her breathe either, but yelled it after us as we were walking out. Because of this disgusting behavior a few of us asked to see the manager to complain but he didn't seem to care much. Bottom line, wIth the addition of the light rail and tons of other bars competing for your business don't bother wasting your time/money with this place when their are plenty of other FRIENDLY places that will actually appreciate the business you're bringing them and refrain from insulting their customers.
I've gone to G&D a few times. I always like the atmosphere and the food, but the service has been dodgy. I went there tonight (Friday, 9/11) for a meal. Our waiter came to us and took out drink order and got us menus. After a couple minutes, my friend and I both knew what we wanted. We proceeded to wait. And wait. I finally noticed our waiter sitting at a booth with two other customers. He was slouched down and laughing and hanging out. I watched this for TEN minutes. I noticed the owner was at the bar, so I was surprised our waiter would be so poor. My friend was extremely irritated, and we already decided we were going to go somewhere else. Eventually, the waiter left the table and then walked to our table. Didn't say anything, just stood there staring at us. We told him that he we sat and watched him chat with the people for 10 minutes while we waited to place our order. We said we were a bit disappointed and would just like to pay for our drinks and leave. He then scoffed and walked away saying, ""Don't worry about the drinks. Ya know, man...I'm just trying to make some money"" while shrugging his shoulders and throwing his arms out. Making money? We ordered two drinks before dinner, had an appetizer and two entrees picked out and were intending on having at least a second drink while eating. But he never got around to taking our order after the initial drinks.
An apology would have been great. Instead, we got confrontational attitude. I left a few bucks. Mainly because it is illegal to serve alcohol for free. So the guy really should have at least charged us SOMEthing for the drinks. We entered the place at 8:15 PM and left at 8:50. Wasted 35 minutes in there for nothing but attitude. It's sad. I've always liked the place, but I think I'll steer clear for a few months. Maybe they'll get rid of that guy by then.
They finally got flat screen TVs! Those ancient tube TVs were getting harder to see, especially the dinky one in the middle. Welcome to the 21st century. As I mentioned, service is h1t and miss. I think the bartenders might be carrying some extra weights in the form of puppies so I let it slide. Good food, decent service, and great beer on tap. Good enough for me.
So I have been to G&D quite often with a large group of friends and up until the other night loved it. However as I got my 3rd and final beer of the night the girl tending bar says to me ""You know what I don't like about you, I get all these drinks for you and you havn't tipped me once. That would be like me asking you to go to work without getting paid."" to which I said ""Well since I am running a tab don't you think I will put your tip on the tab when I am done?"" after that she tried to pretent she was not talking about me and was talking about somebody in my group which is besides the point because she shouldn't have said that at all. When I later told her it was unprofessional the so called manager of the place got all upset and started trying to defend her actions as well.
Having said that the actual owner of the place is a great guy and when he fires those two I will consider returning with my large group. Until then I will go to the Irish pub down the street. Cheers!
My girlfriend and I went on lunch one day I got the fish and it was delicious, we are definately going back!
I lived around the corner from this place for a little before moving back to Philadelphia and it was one of the only places I would go to. The people who worked there were great and the crowds that came in were great as well. I miss the tattoo bartenders and waitresses it was the only bar that reminded me of home. At the end of the night the owner comes out with a megaphone and yells at everyone to go home...classic.
For the people that don't like smoke don't go here there are trendy places right down the street that you would prolly like better anyway.
Ok so we knew it was mostly bar with smokers but they had a seprate room for non-smokers so we thought it would be ok. It wasn't. The fan was set to pull air up, so it pulled all the smoke from the rest of the restaurant. When they brought us our drinks they gave us costers with ""Vote Yes on Prop 206 "" excuse me we aren't smokers and we asked for smoke free area then they try to push us to vote to abbolish all smoke free bars and night clubs in AZ. So now that we all voted in 201 and down 206 so all those dam smokers can stay home and smoke while we enjoy the city. Oh and now G&D can cut down on the salt because we can tast our food with out the extra salt.
NOT that we would ever go back!!!
Update... they are still in business and the smokers just hang out on the porch. Guess the no smoking law didn't put them out of business after all.
G and D is a good place to have a pint of Guiness. I like the crowd, not too trendy (or Scottsdalish, if that is a word).
We eat here every once in a while when we're in the mood for something different from all the other restaurants. G&D has dishes you can't get anywhere else. Our fav - shepherds pie. Big portions, too.
Going to the George and Dragon after Pipe Band pratice is rapidly becoming a tradition for my American-born husband and me, a native Brit - a tradition being driven by my husband, I might add, who loves their food and any excuse to go there. Nothing beats their wonderful Sunday roast dinners accompanied by a glass of good British beer. The food is always hot and the service is usually exceptionally fast and friendly. We also took advantage of the George and Dragon's special opening hours to follow England's progress through the World Cup in great company. We have tried the British Open in Scottsdale, but the atmosphere, food and limited selection of beers there just don't evoke the same fond memories of dining in the local pubs of my home town that the George and Dragon does.
