Cool Decor, Poor Food

I was excited to try Mixto, since it fills in for an otherwise lacking neighborhood. The place is designed well, bar area is a bit small, but the upstairs makes up for it. When we went they couldn't seat us for 20 min, not because it was full, but because not enough wait staff. The food took nearly an hour to come. It was descent, but I was starving by that time so hard to tell how good. My take is that pretty much every menu item is adequate but all taste the same.

Thank you, Mixto!

My friends and I had made reservations Saturday at 7pm for Effie's, a couple of doors away, and they were very impolite when unable to seat us. So eventually we went to Mixto instead, who seated our party of 6 right away. We got attentive service and great food (group favorites were the cassava, seasoned pork, empanadas, and plantains). I'll definitely be going back!

Try Again

At first, we were admiring the atmosphere and already making plans to bring our friends. However, things changed drastically. It took 20 minutes for our waiter to take a drink order and/or give us bread all the while appologizing for not being available. Everything was dry and overcooked (pork, rice, beans). The tostone's were obviously cooked earlier and were tepid and pasty. By the end of the meal we vowed never to return. Weeks later, I had to return for an office dinner. Food a bit better, service ok but it was so cold that half the restaurant was eating with coats and scarves on. I think a restaurant needs to be absoultly on target, especially in the very begining. So, If you're the owner of MIXTO...you better get it together before it's too late! I've heard the same complaints from five other friends. You've lost us all.

The Worst!!

This was just about the worst dining experience I've had in Philly! I went with a couple of friends, waited almost 2 hours for a table, and then another 30 minutes before a server even came to give us menus. Our appetizer sampler was several cold and mushy fried items. They brought us the wrong entree, and just forgot our soup. After we finally got our Paella it was only average and cold. The atmosphere downstairs was OK, but the upstairs reminded more of a chain restaurant . I would NEVER go back!!

if you want to kill LOTS of time

I dine out a LOT, and Mixto's is definitely among my 3 WORST SERVICE experiences ever. I could kinda understand if they were under-staffed, but looking around, I saw that were not. They took an unbelievably long time to bring out food which was quite below average. The difficulty in getting a server's attention was ABSURD, and we only needed one when we wanted to order dessert and to pay! Tired of sitting, and hoping to get someone to bring the check, I stood (visible, but unobstructing). We caught servers' eyes, one even nodded, but no one came. I watched our server chatting for 3 minutes. I stood for over 10 mins, and had been sitting, done with dessert, for 5 mins. We had time, so we waited and timed everything. One positive note: the decor is marvolous. Poor allocation of funds.

A wonderful family lunch at Mixto

Today, my family and I decided to try Mixto. There were eight of us: two children, a baby and five adults. The food was great(try the churrasco argentino and the tostones), the service was outstanding and the ambience was very pleasant. We are from Colombia so we could appreciate the food as very true to its origins and a great representation of our cuisine in Philly.

SlowService, AwsomeAtomsphere, FairFood

A couple of us celebrated our combined birthdays at Mixto this weekend with grave disappointment. The service was so slow. Although we had 13 people, it took us four hours to get out of there. The food was really not that great as compared to other Cuban/Latino places in the city. The drinks were super pricey and not so great. In a nutshell, I don't really recommend this place.

All Show, No Substance

I've eaten at this establishment on several occasions hoping each time that the previous experience was a fluke. It wasn't. The service is slow, and the food is average to below average. This is basically Cuban food done poorly. Nice interior though.

Breakfast is a little more appealing, but then again how hard is it to mess up plain white rice and eggs?

Should be called NIXto

Too bad you can't judge a book by its cover. When you step in the door, you feel at home with the cozy brick walls and welcoming atmosphere. That good feeling ends once you sit down to eat. It was one of the overall worst meals I have ever had. Of five dinners ordered, only one was edible and I think that was just because he was really hungry. It was one problem after the next - you almost had to laugh. And we probably would have if the staff and management was at all helpful or apologetic. We should have left after the slow service we had at the bar while waiting for our table. Definitely not worth the wait. A terrible dining experience.

wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy

The food is terrible. I ordered a steak dish that I had to send back because I could not cut it with a knife. When I spoke to the server he said ""I can't believe they served this"". Another person ordered a pork dish that was too fatty to eat. Our sides arrived 10 mintues after our entrees and all were either cold or incomplete. Once we finally spoke to the manager (we had to go and find him) he offered us dessert and when we declined he sent the bill over immediately with an 18% gratuity all ready included. The food is terrible, the service is terrible, and the management staff is hard to find. The only positive thing about this restaurant is the atmosphere so if you feel the need to visit, have a drink and get out of there.

Very Reasonable

I went expecting an upscale, expensive Latin food experience. What I got was a down-to-earth, extensive menu with reasonable prices and great service. And be sure to get the sweet plantains.

South American Gem

South American girls agree, this is the restaurant they like. Cuban restaurants have been fast on the scene in Philadelphia. Welcome, Mixto! Finally a restaurant in Philadelphia that gives true South American food its credit. Mixto's menu is a hybrid Cuban/Colombian experience. The varied South American native vegatbles and side dishes are delightful while not being to pretentious. The cerviche lacked true authenticity but other appertizers proved to be wonderful. I was impressed by the various rice and bean options and other side dishes to choose from for dinners. It was delightful to feel as if I were really in Colombia. Also, there is a lot to choose from and a great waitstaff to help you decide. If you are looking for good latino food that is reasonable priced and a great dining experience, try out Mixto. You will not be disappointed.

New and improved!

This brand new restaurant is a welcome addition to the Antiques area. Superb service, decicious food, and despite its self-label as fusion, the menu is full of South American and Caribbean cooking. Note to the uninitiated: Neither South American nor Caribbean food is spicy hot nor do Tortillas and salsa exist in this area. Service is done by an eager and young waitstaff, many from that area of the world, who can make suitable recommendations. There are several plantain dishes, a zillion steak dishes, including Colombian ""Sobrebarriga"" and a succulent paella - (the only restaurant I've seen that serves both Paella Marinera -only seafood- and Paella Valenciana -sausage and chicken added). My only criticism is that while the lobster in the paella was cooked to perfection, the shellfish and squid were a bit overcooked. But it was plentiful and finger-licking good. I will be back. By the way, Come hungry.
