- Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is one of the leading research institutions in the world. It has a staff of more than 200 research scientists who decipher the long record of the past, monitor the present and seek to foresee Earth s future. The observatory keeps tracks of global climate change that includes earthquakes, volcanoes, nonrenewable resources and environmental hazards. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is a key component of the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York City. The observatory s divisions include ocean and climate physics, marine geology and geophysics, biology and paleo environment and geochemistry. It teaches students and informs the general public about the earth, its ocean, atmosphere and biosphere. Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory offers teaching program through the Columbia's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. It is located in Palisades, N.Y.
