- ArthritisDespite advanced surgical techniques to treat knee injuries, arthritis of the knee may be the long-term outcome from past traumatic episodes. In addition, with aging, one can lose cartilage; this is termed degenerative or osteoarthritis. Conservative measures are typically the first line treatment approach for these problems, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), therapeutic exercises and activity modification. If conservative measures fail, total knee replacement is one option to relieve pain and to restore function to an arthritic knee. The most common reason for knee replacement is that other treatments (weight loss, exercise/physical therapy, medicines and injections) have failed to relieve arthritis-associated knee pain.

- Emergency CareAlthough rare, medical emergencies can occur. If you are experiencing what you deem to be a medical emergency, you should report to the emergency room or call 911.

- ArthroscopyDr. Edward Schleyer is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in pediatric, adolescent, and adult orthopedic surgery. His clinical expertise is in sports medicine and trauma surgery of the knee, hip, shoulder, and ankle. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive arthroscopy and cartilage preservation surgery.

- Minimally Invasive SurgeryA centerpiece of Dr. Gualtieri’s care is minimally invasive surgery. He primarily utilizes the direct anterior approach for total hip replacements, a muscle sparing technique that allows for a faster recovery after surgery. Additionally, he performs partial knee replacements in select patients. This procedure is a more focused operation that only resurfaces the area of disease while allowing the patient to retain more of their own native anatomy and a more “natural feeling” knee.
- Ankle SurgeryWe offer a full range of orthopedic services at our Gloucester location including diagnosis, treatment and surgery of the musculoskeletal system for adults and children. - Hand SurgeryAs a Beverly native, Liz is excited to be joining a practice with deep roots in her community. Seven years of working in a busy hand surgery practice in Boston has given her a foundation of knowledge and experience that will help her provide comprehensive care to our patients.
- Orthopedic SurgeryAlthough orthopedic surgery implies that most problems seen within this specialty are treated surgically, this notion is far from the truth. In fact, despite the long years of surgical training, most patient care is non-operative. Surgical options are chosen when other methods of treatment have not been effective or when the issue can only be addressed through surgical intervention and through mutual decision between the patient and the surgeon.

- ArthroscopyDr. Gabriel Merlin is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in conditions of the hand, shoulder, and elbow. He performs wrist arthroscopy, endoscopic carpal tunnel release, upper extremity joint replacement and reconstruction, upper extremity trauma and complex fractures, soft tissue injuries, compressive neuropathies, finger tip injuries, work and sports-related injuries, nerve and vascular conditions, and biologic injection therapy. He has published on topics including total elbow arthroplasty, non-operative treatment of distal radius fractures, acromion stress fracture following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, and pectoralis major function after repair.

- Hip ReplacementCoastal Orthopedic hip surgeons and specialists provide a wide range of treatments for hip problems and injuries including hip replacement surgery, also known as hip arthroplasty. This procedure provides pain relief and restores movement to people who have hip pain or stiffness caused by hip arthritis. This procedure is also sometimes used as a treatment for injuries such as a broken hip, a hip that is growing incorrectly and for other conditions.
- Knee ReplacementHealthier patients may have the option of having their hip or knee replacement done at an outpatient surgery center if they wish, instead of the hospital. Outpatient surgery centers are less costly and may be a good option if you and your physician determine that you are a good candidate to have your surgery in this type of location.
