      General Info
      The Norfolk Department of Public Works builds, maintains and operates physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of citizens and visitors. It repairs and maintains more than 2,000 lane miles of city roadways, over 1,000 miles of curbs and nearly 1,000 miles of sidewalks. The department also inspects and maintains 50 bridges and waterfront structures, including seawalls, bulkheads and jetties. The Norfolk Department of Public Works provides towing services to city agencies and residents. Its transportation division operates traffic signals and street lights, as well as coordinates the design and construction of state highway projects. The department s waste management division collects more than 100,000 tons of refuse and bulk and yard waste annually. It is additionally responsible for environmental education and litter prevention programs. The department has over 400 employees.
