- Kidney Disease TreatmentThe American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recognized acupuncture as a valid treatment modality. It can be used to treat specific conditions, and it can be used to help prevent health problems from occurring. Through modern studies involving advanced imaging techniques, acupuncture’s physiological effects have been proven. And, since acupuncture does not involve medications that need to be metabolized, it can be safely performed in almost all pets, even those with liver and kidney disease.

- Spaying and NeuteringNRAH believes in giving your pet the best healthcare possible. That’s why we offer preventative vaccinations and parasite prevention as part of your pet’s yearly check-up/exam. At each exam, the doctor can note and assess any problems or changes in your pet’s health. Preventative care also means spaying/neutering your pet is very important in keeping your pet healthy. Pets can develop cancer in their reproductive organs, just like humans can. Below is a before and after photo of a cat who has just been spayed. We make as little of an incision as possible. We use dissolvable sutures which hide nicely under the skin behind a thin layer of surgical adhesive.
- X-RayNRAH is now equipped with a digital x-ray machine. With digital radiography, we are able to see instant radiographs, making your pet’s diagnosis quicker and more convenient. We also have available...
- MicrochippingMicrochipping is a way to recognize your pet when he/she becomes lost or stolen. It is a simple and inexpensive way to bring your pet back home. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is placed behind the neck. All veterinarians and shelters have a microchip scanner that can detect the microchip so that your pet can be safely returned to you.
- BoardingDr. Connie Hyler-Both, a 1984 graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, moved to WV in 1988. In 1987, she was working for another practice that had a mobile clinic in Hinton, as there was no permanent practice there. She was approached by someone looking to sell a building that he said would be a great location for a veterinary practice in Summers County. She had no idea that it would become New River Animal Hospital., but God did! After much thought and prayer, it was decided to renovate the old store in Nimitz and start a veterinary hospital. Starting with a single employee, we’be grown over time to provide jobs and employment for 9 people. The years have had their ups and downs, including some major health challenges for Doc, but we have developed a loyal clientele and staff. We’ve expanded to provide surgery, digital radiology, dentistry, preventative medicine, laser therapy, boarding and grooming. In 2013, Dr. Sarah Koressel, a 2005 graduate of Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine joined our team in helping offer “our best for pets and their people.” Thirty years later, we’re still here proudly serving the community with care and experience. We treat your pets like family.
- GroomingNew River Animal Hospital is a modern small animal health facility dedicated to the well-being of pets as well as their owners. Our hospital has seen thousands of pets since opening in 1988. We emphasize client education, preventive medicine, semi-annual physical examinations, and vaccinations. - Senior Pet CareCryotherapy is the use of Nitrous Oxide to freeze away skin tags and lesions. This procedure allows the pet to be fully awake making this a great option for our senior pets who may be an increased anesthesia risk. Cryotherapy is quick and effective. The doctor will first make note of lesions that need removed and answer any questions you may have about the procedure. A return appointment will then be made for your pet to have the procedure done. We ask that you bring your pet back 2-3 weeks after the procedure so that the doctor can re-evaluate the lesions.
