- Primary CareIf a referral is required for any visits to a specialist, notify your primary care physician as soon as possible regarding your need for a referral. You must have this on the day of your appointment, otherwise, you will be considered self pay for that date of service.
- Smoking CessationAt your routine visit, you will receive a physical examination and a thorough review of your health history. Take this time to discuss any health problems or concerns with your doctor or nurse practitioner including your heart attack risk. We may also suggest several lifestyle recommendations such as weight control, exercise, smoking cessation, and limiting the use of alcohol and caffeine. Bowel problems such as constipation, hemorrhoids and irritable bowel syndrome may also be discussed.

- ImmunizationsWe want you to play an active role in maintaining good health. If indicated, a pap smear may be performed and a mammogram ordered. Additionally, women ages 13 to 39 should have a tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis booster and possibly the hepatitis B vaccination series. The Gardasil vaccine ( Gardasil9 ) for HPV may be suggested for girls and women ages 9 to 45. Ages 40 to 64 will also need cholesterol testing, colorectal cancer screening, fasting glucose testing and flu vaccine. Women over 50 years old may also need the Shingles vaccine ( Shingrix ). Ages 65 and older will need to add a urinalysis and pneumococcal vaccine.

While the lining of the uterus (endometrium) normally grows inside the uterine cavity, in endometriosis this tissue grows in other areas of the pelvis. This does not always cause symptoms, and it is usually not dangerous.

- Ovarian CancerThe osteoporosis fracture incidence in the U.S. is approximately 1.5 million per year with 700,000 spine fractures, 300,000 hip fractures, 200,000 wrist fractures and 300,000 other. Approximately 1 in 2 women and 1 in 8 men over the age 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. The current annual cost of all osteoporotic fractures is estimated to be 17 billion dollars and rising. The prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia is approximately 28-44 million Americans compared to the prevalence of hypertension at 30-54 million, elevated cholesterol at 52 million and diabetes at 14 million. The lifetime risk in women of an osteoporotic fracture is greater than the risk of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer combined. The lifetime risk in men of an osteoporotic fracture is greater than the risk of prostate cancer.

- EndocrinologyDr. Coates was excited to continue her training in Louisville, where she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Louisville. During her residency training, she has served as the community health outreach chair and as the resident physician chair for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG). Additionally, she has received the following recognitions: University of Louisville Dept. of OBGYN - Outstanding Achievement in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Outstanding Resident and Achievement in Family Planning, University of Louisville Dept. of OBGYN Perlman Award for Excellence in Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the University of Louisville House Staff Outstanding Achievement in Community Engagement Award. Dr. Coates continues to serve the community as a member of the Coalition for Black Maternal Health, and she serves as this regions District Chair for ACOG, where she advocates for all members of the community, including women of diverse backgrounds and the LGBTQ community.

- Minimally Invasive SurgeryTypically minimally invasive surgery is terminology that implies small incisions, a quick recovery, and little or no hospital stay. In certain instances major surgical procedures can now be performed through minimally invasive techniques.
- HysterectomyPossible treatment options include myomectomy (surgical removal of the individual fibroid), uterine artery embolization, hysteroscopy and hysterectomy. Sometimes, medicines such as Depo Lupron can be given to temporarily stop heavy bleeding.
- Endometrial AblationSome procedures previously performed at the hospital under general anesthesia are now able to be accomplished in the office. Endometrial ablation is now being performed in the office by the physicians at OB/GYN Associates of Southern Indiana with anesthesia supervised sedations significantly improving operative discomfort and post anesthesia side effects. We are accredited by t he American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.
- LaparoscopyEndometriosis can be diagnosed with a thorough medical history and there may also be clues during a physical exam. The gold standard for diagnosis is surgical procedure called a laparoscopy.
