General Info
As a chiropractor, about 95-98 % of the people coming into my office have at the very least a loss of their cervical curve. Often they come in due to the effects of this loss. No statistics exist regarding the prevalence in the general population but I imagine it would be of 80%. I hypothesize this due to the causes of a loss of the curve. The cause that we all automatically think of is a car accident injury or a whiplash injury. In particular if that injury was never really addressed. Quite often following an accident a person will experience neck pain, but the pain gradually will diminish with or without treatment. However, what often happen is that the discomfort from the muscle strain abates and the person may think that they are okay, but they never really address the larger problem which is the alignment of the cervical spine.Other causes of this problem are injuries, in particular sports injuries. Football players, wrestlers, dancers, cheerleaders and skiers, among others are all at risk ofcervical spine trauma including repetitive trauma.Probably the most common cause of the loss of the cervical spine curve is postural due to day to day activities. Sleeping without the proper pillow, bent over a desk, staring at a computer, slouched in front of the television and hunched over a game boy all contribute little by little, day by day, over the course of years. The head falls forward and then gravity kicks in and compounds the force, the shoulders and upper back round forward. So is there really anything one can do about this, and if so what? Yes, absolutely weather you are 20, 40. Or 60, this problem can be addressed. Obviously the sooner it is addressed the better the prognosis and the quicker the healing process. In our office we have gotten great results at every age.Effective and necessary treatments include; chiropractic adjustments, whether they are manual or mechanical using implementation such as an activator, this will restore normal alignment. Massage to address the tight upper trapezious muscles and the shortened neck and pectoral muscles. Cervical traction to reverse the abnormal curvature, gradually with gentle pressure. Exercises to strengthen the upper back muscles and allow one to sit up straighter without effort and finally accessing ones daily activities. Does you work station need to be modified? Your car seat adjusted? Your game boy activities limited? In our office we will look at all of those factors and determine which are appropriate for you with regards to your age, loss of curvature and activities.
