We have been enjoying the Main Street American Cafe since the new owner took over. If you are a Mays Landing local, you need to know this is not the 'same old' Main Street Cafe. New owner, great chef, nice servers. The food is outstanding. The gumbo a favorite of my family. The service is very good. This is a small cafe atmosphere with great home cooking. We like the food so much, we hired the restaurant to cater an event for 100 people at our marina. It was a terrific success. Only compliments, not one complaint, and you know what a miracle that is, when serving 100. If you haven't tried this little gem of a cafe, I would encourage you to. Pretty certain you will go back again and again.

I've had lunch here twice in the last month. The first time was okay, although service was slow. the second time was awful, starting with the waiter setting the table with his fingers on the fork tines and business end of the spoons. Although the menu promised a soup of the day, the waiter said the kitchen had not yet made soup. (it was 1 pm.) I ordered gumbo and my wife and I split a chicken mojo sandwich. the gumbo sat on a counter for about 15 minutes before arriving at the table. it was lukewarm and lackluster... Needed some file' powder. oh yes, before the gumbo or sandwich arrived, we were given a couple of beignets dusted with powdered sugar... A strange appetizer! A request for mayonnaise was steadfastly ignored. But the presentation of utensils was utterly disgusting., a total turnoff
In the heart of Mays Landing, NJ, you'll find the The Main Street American Cafe. I've been to this cafe a few times, and have never been disappointed. Today, my server was Jessica, herself a world-traveled, young chef, whose service and conversation were exemplary. Although it has the word "American" in its title, this quaint cafe is universal enough to begin your meal with one of their special treats, a powdered sugar-dusted French biegnet. It was fresh, warm and melted on the tongue. I enjoyed the grilled crabmeat sandwich. The meat was all claw meat. It was accompanied by a perfectly seasoned remoulade, with just enough bite to make it invigorating (I'm not a fan of spicy foods, so it was perfect). In lieu of the chips that usually accompany the sandwich, I asked for grilled vegetables. The vegetables were a medley of broccoli rabe, zucchini and squash. They were sauteed to perfection, with the outside being just a bit crispy, inside, fresh and al dente. A must try. ~ Angela Rinck

Had breakfast there this morning. It was great, look forward to their monthly specials with music. Where have you been hiding Richard Spurlock!
