The Head Start located in Lansing, Mich., has a long tradition of delivering comprehensive services designed to foster healthy development in low-income children. Head Start is a comprehensive child development program, which serves children from birth to age 5, pregnant women and their families. Child-focused, its overall goal is to increase the school readiness of young children in low-income families. The Head Start program is administered by the Head Start Bureau; the Administration on Children, Youth and Families; Administration for Children and Families; and the Department of Health and Human Services. Head Start grantee and delegate agencies provide individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; medical, dental, and mental health; nutrition; and parent involvement. The organization was founded in 1964 to meet the needs of disadvantaged children.
