- CrownsDental implants have been used for many decades. There have been many different styles of dental implants over the years, but for the sake of simplicity, imagine a dental implant as a structure that resembles a small metal post or screw that is inserted into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. A small portion at the end of the implant can be extended into the mouth so that a prosthetic tooth (crown) can be placed on top of it. Together, the implant and the prosthetic crown can serve to replace a missing tooth and can potentially last a lifetime. The materials used to make a traditional implant are designed to promote osseointegration. This means that the bone that surrounds the implant can fuse to it, creating a permanent complex.
- Root Canal TreatmentOne of the most important things for an orthodontic patient to remember is that proper tooth brushing is an absolute requirement for successful treatment. Food particles and plaque can accumulate on and around the teeth more quickly when braces are on the teeth. Improper brushing can lead to disastrous consequences such as swollen gums, bleeding gums, permanent loss of gum tissue, bad breath, tooth sensitivity, cavities and permanent staining & discoloration of the teeth. Prolonged neglect of the teeth while in braces can quickly lead to the need for costly dental procedures such as fillings, root canal therapy, and gum surgery. The cleanliness of your teeth will be evaluated at each appointment. If poor oral hygiene is noted at several consecutive appointments, the orthodontist reserves the right to temporarily remove the braces until oral hygiene is improved. This will cause the total treatment time to be extended, and a rebonding fee will be assessed when the braces are placed again.
- Dental ImplantsIn more recent decades, temporary implants have been developed for various uses. Temporary implants used in conjunction with orthodontic therapy are known as “mini screws”, “mini implants” or TADs. TAD is an acronym that stands for temporary anchorage device. TADs are smaller than traditional implants and they are not designed for osseointegration. The most common use for a TAD is as an anchorage point from which a force can be applied to move a tooth.

- Jaw SurgeryIn addition to conventional orthodontic treatment, Dr. Kolodziej offers treatment using the Invisalign® appliance system, and is certified as an Invisalign® orthodontist. As alternatives to stainless steel braces, he offers gold and ceramic appliances as well. Other orthodontic services such as treatments combined with orthognathic surgery (“jaw surgery”), laser procedures and Botox® injection are offered when indicated. Early treatment (“Phase 1”) is routinely provided in those cases where early interception is needed to prevent complications, but whenever possible he prefers to defer treatment until most of the permanent teeth are erupted.

- Maxillofacial SurgeryImpacted wisdom teeth have the potential to develop a variety of complications if left untreated. Fully impacted wisdom teeth can, on rare occasions, lead to the development of cysts within the jaw. They may also contribute to localized pain. Partially impacted wisdom teeth can lead to recurrent inflammation, infection, localized periodontal disease, and pain. Furthermore, partially impacted wisdom teeth can often be difficult to clean effectively and may be at risk for dental caries (cavities). On the other hand, impacted wisdom teeth that are left untreated do not always lead to a problem. For this reason, it is important that you discuss treatment options with a general dentist and/or specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery (oral surgeon).

- BracesCertain types of food must be avoided while in braces. Some other foods should be eaten carefully while in braces. Eating foods that are not compatible with braces can damage or dislodge them and lead to a longer treatment time. Here are a few guidelines to follow.
- General DentistryDr. Kolodziej was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He remained in Pittsburgh to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine where he received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1996. After receiving his D.M.D., he elected to pursue advanced education in general dentistry and served as a general practice resident at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Pittsburgh. After completing his G.P.R. he was accepted as a graduate resident in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry.
