Wellness Exam

I asked the doctor (who is the insurance coder for this office) for a 'wellness exam,' as this was covered by my insurance, but it was instead submitted as a 'diagnostic exam.' When I get an unexpected charge for over $100 for talking to Dr. Shaid, it takes multiple phone calls to both this office and my insurance to clear up the issue. In essence, the doctor disregarded my request for a 'wellness exam' and did indeed perform a 'diagnostic exam' without my consent. Additionally, this office claimed a 'wellness exam' cannot be delivered to new patients, which my insurance company, Ambetter, disagrees with. The office failed to explain why I was not informed of new visits never being coded as a 'wellness visit' before my exam when I specifically requested a 'wellness exam.' The typical procedure is a 'diagnostic exam' is a separate exam scheduled after a 'wellness exam,' or an exam done with the intent of diagnosing a problem from the moment of scheduling. As neither of these cases applied to my visit, this seems to be gross incompetency at best or malicious at worse. Either way, I will never be returning to this practice and would advise others to seek a primary care physician elsewhere.
