- Established in 1885, Jacksonville Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of animals. The organization provides adoption services for pure and mixed-breed animals. Its adoption fees include the cost of spaying and neutering, initial inoculations, heartworm prescreen for dogs and feline leukemia testing for cats. As a part of the Nestle Purina's Pets for People program, the organization offers subsidized pet adoption services to senior citizens above 60 years. It participates in the American Humane Association's Kind News newsletter available for school classes. The organization is funded by individual donations, wills and bequests, and money received from shelter service. Its pet cemetery offers burial, cremation and memorization services for pets. Located in Jacksonville, Fla., the organization is spread over an area of more than 10 acres.
