- ArthritisRheumatoid arthritis is a major crippling disorder, and perhaps the most serious form of arthritis. It is a complex, chronic inflammatory group of diseases, often affecting more than a dozen smaller joints during its course, and frequently in both ankles, or the index fingers of both hands.
- Plantar FasciitisExtracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or ESWT is one of the newest treatments we offer for plantar fasciitis and other soft tissue pathology. Our treatments use Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology, or EPAT, which is a form of extracorporeal shock wave therapy.
- Primary CareScheduling periodic visits with your primary care physician or endocrinologist. The foot and ankle surgeon works together with these and other providers to prevent and treat complications from diabetes.

- Kidney StonesExtracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is another modern treatment we offer for heel pain. This treatment uses high-power sound waves to end chronic heel pain without surgery. The discovery of ESWT came about somewhat by accident. Shock wave therapy is used regularly by urologists to break up and disperse kidney stones. Urologists began reporting that patients who had kidney stones treated showed increased bone density and new tissue growth. This led to studies for using shock wave therapy for soft tissue injuries with amazing results: 75%-80% of patients with soft tissue injuries we reported to be healed or greatly improved following ESWT. ESWT works by purposely targeting trauma at the pain site. This stimulates diseased tissue and activates your body’s own healing process. Blood and oxygen rush to the site, activating a metabolic response that fosters healing by the growth of new connective tissue. This is what is damaged and torn when you have plantar fasciitis or heel spur pain. The most important aspects of EWST are that it ends pain, the procedure in not painful, there isn’t a lengthy recovery period, and there are no side effects.
- Carpal Tunnel SyndromeTarsal Tunnel Syndrome is caused when the posterial tibial nerve which runs through the tarsal tunnel, a tight space in the boot the lies between bones and tough fibrous tissue, becomes compressed or squeezed. Symptoms include numbness over the bottom of the foot and/or pain, burning and tingling over the base of the foot and heel. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, which occurs in the wrist.

- MRIA clinical exam, MRI, or X-ray may be used to differentiate and diagnose this condition. However, additional masses may occur on the bottom of the foot such as: ganglion cysts, inclusion cysts, calluses, verruca (plantar warts), healed tendon ruptures, nerve tumors, as well an array of benign and malignant or cancerous soft tissue tumors. It’s best to be evaluated by a medical professional when you notice an abnormal growth on the bottom of your foot.

- Wound CareThe science of wound care has advanced significantly over the past ten years. The old thought of “let the air get at it†is now known to be harmful to healing. We know that wounds and ulcers heal faster, with a lower risk of infection, if they are kept covered and moist. The use of full-strength betadine, peroxide, whirlpools and soaking are NOT recommended, as this could lead to further complications.
- Ankle SurgeryDr. Holcombe is a native Texan who completed her residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, and has participated in an orthopedic trauma fellowship in Austria.
- Bunion SurgeryThere are a number of different ways to perform bunion surgery. The best procedure for one person is not necessarily the best for another. Some procedures allow you to walk much sooner meaning you may not have to use crutches for as long, and some require longer non weightbearing. Depending on your foot type and symptoms, a specific procedure may be warranted over another.

- NeurosurgeryThe surgery was developed by Dr. Lee Dellon, Professor of Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery at John Hopkins University, who discovered that nerves were subject to compression and swelling in areas that were anatomically tight, including the inside of the ankle, which caused symptoms of neuropathy.
- Arthroscopy
- Ingrown ToenailsThe most common cause of ingrown toenails improper trimming. Cutting your nails too short encourages the skin next to the nail to fold over the nail. Another cause of ingrown toenails is wearing shoes that are tight or short.
- Reconstructive SurgeryIn some cases, a surgery may need to be performed to repair a torn or damaged tendon and restore normal function. In the most severe cases, reconstructive surgery may be required.
- Plastic Surgery
- Hammertoe SurgeryI recently had Bunion and Hammertoe surgery and I am very pleased with Dr. Williams and his staff. They are very kind and friendly, made me feel comfortable and safe every visit. The process went smooth and my follow up has been GREAT! Thumbs up!
- CornsWhether you are a professional athlete or play sports just for fun, the demands made on your feet and lower limbs can lead to a range of injuries, including blisters, sprained ankles, torn ligaments, shin splints (leg pain), knee pain, low back pain and other joint or muscle problems. Added to these are common complaints such as corns, calluses and Athlete’s foot. Your running style, poor footwear and even minor limb length differences can also contribute to injury.
- Cyst
- UlcerPatients with diabetes have an increased risk of developing foot ulcers or sores. A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound that occurs in approximately 15 % of patients with diabetes and is commonly located on the bottom of the foot. Of those who develop a foot ulcer, 6 percent will be hospitalized due to infection or other ulcer-related complication. Foot ulcers are the most common reason for hospital stays in people with diabetes and may take weeks or months to heal.
- CallusesNever try to remove calluses, corns or warts by yourself. Commercial, over-the-counter preparations that remove warts or corns should be avoided because they can burn the skin and cause irreplaceable damage to the foot of a diabetic sufferer. Never try to cut calluses with a razor blade or any other instrument because the risk of cutting yourself is too high, and such wounds can often lead to more serious ulcers and lacerations. See your podiatric physician for assistance in these cases.
- FungusThis antifungal shoe spray is a safe, highly effective spray containing natural antimicrobial silver in a proprietary formulation that kills bacteria and fungus. Shoe Shield helps neutralize shoe odor by quickly eliminating its source.
- Sports MedicineVenapro is a new, portable, and easy-to-use technology that will further enable us to lower your risks of getting a DVT following surgery or any type of injury that may require you to have a prolonged period of non-weight-bearing status. These can include but are not limited to fractures following sports injuries, and chronic ulcerations that require casting.
- Physical TherapyNonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, icing, physical therapy, supportive taping, bracing, and orthotics are common treatments for painful progressive flatfoot.

- Ankle SprainChronic ankle instability is often the result of an ankle sprain that was not adequately healed or treated properly. It is one of the reasons it is so important to see a physician if you injured or rolled your ankle. Often when an ankle is sprained, it is at high risk for recurrence causing more damage if it is not treated properly.

- Achilles TendonitisAchilles tendonitis results from overuse of the tendon, and is often seen in active people who have increased or changed their exercise intensity. It can also be seen in middle aged people who are active on the weekends playing higher impact sports such as basketball or tennis.
- Ankle InstabilityChronic ankle instability is a condition that results from recurrent lateral ankle sprains. It may cause a patient to have the feeling that their ankle “gives out” on them and causes a loss of balance or a fall. It is common in athletes and others who have suffered from recurrent ankle sprains or untreated ankle sprains.
- Ankle SprainNorth Texas Foot & Ankle is proud to be on the forefront of medical technology, by providing the FDA approved MLS Laser Therapy treatment for foot and ankle injuries, pain, and other conditions.
- Arthritic Foot CareArthritis is a disabling and occasionally crippling disease afflicting almost 40 million Americans. In some forms, it appears to be hereditary. While the prevalence of arthritis increases with age, all people from infancy to middle age are potential victims. People over 50 are the primary targets.
- Bunions ProblemsA majority of noninfected foot ulcers are treated without surgery; however, when this fails, surgical management may be appropriate. Examples of surgical care to remove pressure on the affected area include shaving or excision of bone(s) and the correction of various deformities, such as hammertoes, bunions, or bony “bumps.â€

- Diabetic Foot CareAccording to the American Diabetes Association, about 15.7 million people (5.9 percent of the United States population) have diabetes. Nervous system damage (also called neuropathy) affects about 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes and is a major complication that may cause diabetics to lose feeling in their feet or hands.

- Fungus ToenailsHyperblue Plus is a specifically designed FDA cleared laser for the treatment of toenail fungus or Onychomycosis. It uses wavelengths that will penetrate through the toenail and safely kills the fungus living in the nail plate and surrounding tissue. It includes those embedded in the nail beds which are actually under the physical toenail, where excess debris and fungus can accumulate making it difficult to reach with traditional treatments.
- Geriatric Foot CareIt’s normal for people to experience some foot problems as they age. But experts say that problems with feet can be the first sign of more serious medical conditions, particularly among older adults. Health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes, nerve issues, and circulatory disorders, may first be manifested in the feet. That is why it is important to pay attention to your feet and seek medical attention as soon as you notice a problem.
- HammertoesCauses of hammertoe include improperly fitting shoes and muscle imbalance. Treatment for the condition typically involves wearing shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Commercially available straps, cushions, or nonmedicated corn pads may also relieve symptoms.
- Heel SpursHeel spur syndrome, the condition is often successfully treated with conservative measures, such as the use of anti-inflammatory medications, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. Note: Please consult your physician before taking any medications. In persistent cases, APC Injections or Extracorporeal Shock Wave Treatment (ESWT) may be used to treat the heel pain.

- Foot WartsPlantar warts, also known as verrucas, appear on the soles of the feet and are one of several soft tissue conditions that can be quite painful. Unlike other foot warts, plantar warts tend to be hard and flat, with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries. They are often gray or brown (but the color may vary), with a center that appears as one or more pinpoints of black. Plantar warts are often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground. The virus that causes plantar warts thrives in warm, moist environments, making infection a common occurrence in public pools and locker rooms.
- Foot OrthoticsUse of foot orthotics following surgery: Bunion surgery does not usually alleviate all of the forces that caused the bunion in the first place. This is because the biomechanical cause of the bunion is often due to function in another part of the foot. Surgery to correct the underlying biomechanical cause would, in many situations, be too extensive and involved to be a practical treatment option. In addition, it is simply not necessary in most cases. Once the bunion is corrected, foot orthoses will likely be used to improve foot biomechanical function and help prevent return of the bunion deformity. The orthotics can fit into many shoe types, including women’s dress shoes. Note that if you already have orthotics, you will likely need new ones after surgery to match the new shape of your foot.
- Plantar FasciitisAre you living with chronic pain in a muscle or tendon that will not go away? The severe pain associated with conditions such as chronic tendinitis and plantar fasciitis can affect your daily life. North Texas Foot & Ankle offers Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT) Shockwave Therapy, a breakthrough treatment that uses a wave of pressure transmitted to the source of pain to improve circulation and promote the natural healing process.
- Podiatric DeformitiesUlcers form due to a combination of factors, such as lack of feeling in the foot, poor circulation, foot deformities, irritation (such as friction or pressure), and trauma, as well as duration of diabetes. Patients who have diabetes for many years can develop neuropathy, a reduced or complete lack of feeling in the feet due to nerve damage caused by elevated blood glucose levels over time. The nerve damage often can occur without pain and one may not even be aware of the problem. Your podiatric physician can test feet for neuropathy with a simple and painless tool called a monofilament.
