- Traffic ViolationsGenerally, offenses can be divided into three categories: Felonies, Misdemeanors, and Infractions. The most serious crimes are classified as felonies. A felony is defined as a crime punishable by more than one year of incarceration in a prison or jail. A misdemeanor is a less serious crime and one that is punishable by no more than one year of incarceration. An infraction is a violation of an ordinance or statute that does not subject the person to a criminal conviction or jail time. A speeding ticket would be an example of an infraction.

- FraudA majority of criminal charges are investigated by local law enforcement, filed by county prosecutors and heard in state court. However, some crimes can ben violations of federal law. These are generally more serious crimes at have in some way crossed state lines or have had some impact beyond the place they occurred. Crimes such as drug trafficking and conspiracy, child pornography, bank robbery, kidnapping, and financial crimes such as wire and mail fraud are often filed in federal district court. They often carry harsher penalties and can have a long-lasting impact on a person’s life.
- RobberyOur firm’s practice is focused on the most serious criminal matters. These include violent crimes such as murder, manslaughter, aggravated battery, and armed robbery; sex crimes such as rape, child molestation, and child exploitation; and serious drug crimes that allege dealing, trafficking, and possession of significant quantities of controlled substances. - MisdemeanorsOften times a criminal case begins when a person is arrested. An arrest is defined in the Indiana Code as "the taking of a person into custody that he may be held to answer for a crime". An arrest can take place when a law enforcement officer has probable cause to believe that a person has committed a felony or when the officer has observed what he or she believes to have been a misdemeanor committed in his or her presence. An arrest can also be made after a court issues an arrest warrant. A person who is arrested has the right to consult with an attorney prior to answering any questions or providing any information to the arresting officer or other law enforcement officials.

- MurderMurder: This is the most serious charge one can face under Indiana law. The sentence for a murder conviction is a fixed term between forty-five (45) and sixty-five (65) years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.00. In certain cases a murder conviction can result in a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Murder is also a capital offense, meaning that in certain cases a murder conviction can result in the death penalty being imposed.
- Probation ViolationFor all criminal charges except murder, a person arrested in Indiana has a right to bail. In many counties in Indiana, there is a bail schedule, which is used, particularly for less serious charges, to establish the standard amount of bail for a particular charge. In those instances a person arrested can often post bail based on the bond schedule either through the sheriff or the clerk's office before his or her initial hearing has even occurred. In other instances, the court will set the amount of bail at the initial hearing. If a person is arrested while on probation, Indiana law allows the person to be held for up to fifteen (15) days without bail (often referred to as a "15-day hold") to allow time for a probation violation to be considered. Once the 15 days is over the court must set bail on the new case, although if a probation violation is filed, Indiana law allows a person to be held without bail on that violation.
