SMAW (shielded metal arc welding): SMAW, shielded metal arc welding (stick welding). This welding process uses individual welding rods and is useful for work conducted outdoors and less than ideal conditions and is usually limited to steels and stainless steels. It produces very high quality and high strength welds but is more time consuming than other methods. It can be used for joining or hard-surfacing various materials. GMAW, gas metal arc welding (mig). This welding process uses a continuous filler wire and is useful for work conducted indoors or where the work can be shielded from drafts. It can be used to weld steels, stainless steels, and aluminum. It is considerably faster than SMAW. FCAW, flux-cored arc welding (flux-cored mig). This welding process is useful for outdoor work where large volumes of weld metal are required. It is less susceptible to weld contamination from environmental conditions than GMAW. It is generally used to produce high quality welds in steels and steel alloys. GTAW, gas tungsten arc welding (tig). This welding process is useful for producing very high quality welds in steel, aluminum, pipe, and very light gauge materials. It is sometimes used to produce root passes in pipe.
