I adopted my dog a few months ago and couldn’t be happier. I am so blessed to not only find such an amazing companion, but one who was fully trained. Beau was knowledgeable, kind, and extremely helpful. Our dog Butch is a great family dog, potty trained, knows some basic commands, uses a doggy door, and loves everyone. Anyone looking for a companion should check this place out!

We have been looking for the right dog for a while. Every time we have visited the Hermiston shelter, Beau (& his family) and Nancy are extremely kind and helpful. They welcome visitors and take time to answer questions. I would love to see Hermiston take up a drive to fund better housing for the dogs. The kennels are clean. I have never noted overcrowding, but they are dark little cement jail cells all in a row. The cats have pleasant quarters, with furry climbing trees and toys; they look quite content. It would be wonderful to see a well-lit, tiled dog area, with dog kennels around the sides, adequate room for large dogs, inexpensive blankets or rubber-backed rugs for every dog. Safe chewy toys, like Nylabones would be good for most of the dogs.

Absolutely impressed with the staff. They are kind and caring to the animals and to everyone who walks in the door.

My name is Rochelle Jacks, Patrick Hunt and I have 3 kids together and we have started volunteering at the animal shelter. right now we have a cute small black puppy with browneyebrows, he is part chihuahua and I am not sure what. Our daughters all want a dog, but I feel donating time and foster care will see if the girls are all ready for a permanent new member of our family. He is up for adoption right now, house broke and very lovable, he loves to play, be held and eat treats. He preferrs relaxing houses and children that are calm, but he does not bite. He also loves to go on walks, and mark his territory on trees outside. We hope he finds a good home soon, little Billy certainly deserves one.

This shelter needs a lot of improvement. The policies are very outdated and inconsistent. They do not vaccinate animals upon intake, only if they are adopted, which means greater risk of disease tranmission. There is no quarentine area for sick or newly-intake animals - obviously sick animals are placed near healthy ones (sometimes even in the same cage). They don't have a consistent volunteer program, and many people are turned away from volunteering because it's "too much work" to organize them. They don't maintain a website, and their Petfinder page is usually out of date and rarely has nice photographs of the adoptable animals (even though there are photographers in the community who volunteer to take them). Even though they are paid through taxpayer dollars, they often refuse to catch at-large dogs that are reported to them. They keep terrible hours that make it difficult for people to communicate with them, or to come see animals for adoption.

All in all, this shelter needs to update it's policies and get more organized if they want to stop euthanizing so many animals every year.

We found our Border Colie at this place and he has been the best addition to our family! We are now looking for another one! His name is Max and he was a handful in the beginning but now he is such a smart, and loving dog!
