MBG Marketing is a producer-owned blueberry marketing cooperative that was formed in 1936 as Michigan Blueberry Growers. Under the guidance of Stanley Johnston, more than 10 growers united to organize and market their blueberries as a group. By 1938, the group had established packaging standards, which included labeling with an MBG logo and grower name and location. Membership eventually extended into northern Indiana, Georgia and Florida. In the late 1980s, it began to source blueberries from Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and North Carolina. The 1990s saw the creation of The Blueberry Store, which offers a mix of gourmet food items, clothing, pottery and a variety of blueberry gift and novelty items. With a production base of more than 550 growers and total annual sales in excess of $63 million, MBG is one of the single largest marketers of fresh and processed cultivated blueberries in the world.
