It is responsible for administering pension, health, and retirement savings and other benefit programs as authorized by General Conference, the United Methodist Church's highest legislative body. The General Board is involved in shareholder advocacy, proxy voting, portfolio screening and community investing. It remains the largest denominational investor in affordable housing programs for low- to moderate-income families in the United States. To date, it has allocated nearly $1 billion for affordable housing and community development investments. Its services affect more than 66,000 clergy, lay participants and their families, representing approximately 26,000 retirees or their beneficiaries and 45,000 active workers.
