- Primary CareDuring the exam, visual acuity (sharpness), depth perception, eye alignment, and eye movement are tested. Eye drops are used to make your pupils larger so your eye doctor can see inside your eyes and check for signs of health problems. Your eye doctor may even spot other conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, sometimes before your primary care doctor does.
- GlaucomaGlaucoma is a slow, progressive and asymptomatic disease of the eye. Because it is painless and symptoms aren’t always obvious, vision loss is often not noticed until the disease is already advanced. It is the second-leading cause of blindness (after diabetes) for Caucasians and the leading cause of blindness for African-Americans in the United States. How is Glaucoma diagnosed?

- CataractsRock some shades: The damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation aren’t limited to your skin. If left unprotected, UVA and UVB rays can harm your eyes and contribute to the formation of cataracts. When you’re out in the sun (even in the wintertime), it’s important to wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for full protection from harmful radiation. Opt for lenses that offer 100 percent UV protection and be aware that this is not a feature offered by all types of sunglasses. Polarized, mirror-coated, blue-blocking and photochromic lenses have different features that can make it easier to see in bright sunlight, but they don’t all automatically block UV rays.

- UltrasoundDr. Zieker performs cataract surgery on an outpatient basis, using mild sedation and local anesthesia. He uses the latest, cutting-edge laser technology, ultrasound technology, with a micro-incision that doesn’t require stitches. The surgery is done in the operating room where you are conscious, but sedated. The cataract is removed through a small corneal incision using ultrasound energy. This process is called phacoemulsification. It is exceedingly rare to have any pain or discomfort with this technique. The surgery can take from 10 to 30 minutes and you will be at the surgery center for three to four hours.
