General Info

Museum of Cape Fear: Two floors of exhibits showcase the history of the twenty counties of southeastern North Carolina. Exhibits include information and artifacts relating to American Indians, European settlement, African American slavery, plank roads, steamboating, industry, the Civil War, and much more. A changing exhibit gallery focuses on topics of special interest. 1897 Poe House: This late-Victorian residence was built by the Poe family of Fayetteville. E. A. and Josephine Poe reared eight children in the house. Mr. Poe owned and operated a local brickyard, and Mrs. Poe attended to home and family. Arsenal park: This four-and-one-half-acre site contains the remnants of the United States Arsenal. The federal government built this facility in 1836 to store arms and manufacture ordnance goods. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the State of North Carolina ordered its seizure and turned it over to the Confederacy. During the war the arsenal produced the Fayetteville rifle. On March 11, 1865, Union forces under General William T. Sherman destroyed the facility. -
