- ArthritisArthritis – Pain and stiffness in joints caused either through wear and tear (osteoarthritis), abnormal immune response (rheumatoid arthritis) or other causes (gout).
- Plantar FasciitisPlantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that causes pain in one or both of your heels. The pain can become so intense that it disrupts your active lifestyle.
- CryotherapySeveral professional treatments are available, from topical medications to cryotherapy to surgical excision. Each protocol comes with certain pros and cons, so we’ll be sure to talk over each one with you so you can make an informed choice.
- Pediatric CareIt doesn’t seem to make much sense that children’s feet and ankles could face many problems. They’re so... new.
- Primary CareYou may wonder why you should call us instead of going to the emergency room, urgent care, or your primary care physician. While these are all certainly alternative options, there are several reasons why Capital Podiatry Associates should be first on your call list...
- Smoking CessationPreventive Measures: Identifying PAD at an early stage enables you to make lifestyle modifications and adopt preventive measures to manage the disease. These may include exercise, smoking cessation, healthy eating habits, and medication management.
- Emergency Care. We understand that time is critical after an acute injury, and can often accommodate an urgent need for an appointment. We may even be faster than urgent care.
- Diabetic Foot CarePlus, because we are also a podiatry practice, we can help you organize a long-term plan for preventing foot wounds in the future, including custom orthotics, therapeutic shoes, regular diabetic foot care exams and screenings, and more. It’s extremely convenient to have all of these care options under “one roof†—and of course, we also will work in cooperation with other members of your medical team (or provide necessary referrals to other specialists) to help you stay on top of your care.

- UltrasoundThat’s why we offer a wide variety of advanced conservative therapies, including the Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser therapy, therapeutic ultrasound, premium orthotic insoles and shoes, and more. Often, these tools allow us to treat injuries non-invasively when more traditional conservative treatments would have fallen short.
- MRIWhen diagnosing an ankle fracture, Dr. Gilmore will order x-rays to determine the type of fracture and how best to treat it. He may also ask for a CT scan or MRI if the x-rays are not clear.
- X-Rays
- Computed Tomography
- Chemotherapy
- Wound CareIt is important to understand how diabetic wounds form and what to look for to care for them properly. With proper diabetic wound care, most injuries can heal successfully.
- Pinched NerveWhen you squeeze a nerve, you disrupt the normal delivery of sensory information from the brain to the body. So, you can develop some nerve pain, numbness, and tingling. This is a pinched nerve.
- Ankle SurgeryAlthough both of our physicians are excellent surgeons who have each performed thousands of successful procedures, we still see foot and ankle surgery as a last resort.
- Bunion SurgerySurgery is the only way to fix—and permanently eliminate—a bunion. During bunion surgery, our doctor will remove the bunion and realign the big toe joint. The surgical procedure you undergo will likely depend on the severity of the bunion itself, as well as the condition of the bones and connective tissue surrounding the joint.
- BunionsBunions can be caused by the natural shape of your foot and/or the way you walk. If you have an abnormal gait or foot structure, the pressure on your big toe joint can force it to bend inward, essentially making it possible for the bones near the front of your foot to move out of their proper position.
- NeurosurgeryPeripheral nerve surgery to decompress nerves that may be damaged due because of pressure or obstruction by other structures in the foot and ankle.
- Ingrown ToenailsIf you notice pain, redness, swelling, or extreme sensitivity around the edge or border of a toenail, don’t ignore it. While they can sometimes be treated at home, ingrown toenails that become infected or keep returning are serious concerns, particularly for those with diabetes or poor circulation.
- CornsA bunion can form on one or both feet. Sometimes a bunion’s formation can cause other foot issues, including the development of corns and calluses.
- UlcerEven a small problem, when left unattended, has the potential to turn into something dire. Even a small nick to the foot can turn into a serious ulcer, thanks to several factors that can work against a diabetic patient. Quickly discovering wounds of any size and giving them the prompt and thorough care they need is essential to preventing major complications.Â
- CallusesCorns & calluses are areas of thickened skin that build up in response to sustained pressure or friction. Calluses tend to be wide, flat, located in weight bearing areas (such as the sole), and rarely painful. Corns tend to be shaped more like cones, with an area of soft and inflamed skin surrounding a harder “core.†They are more likely to develop on and between toes, and are more likely to be painful.
- Eczema
- FungusThe diagnosis can typically be made based on a simple visual inspection. In some cases, we may take a sample of your nail for laboratory testing to identify the specific type of fungus present, or rule out conditions that can produce similar symptoms.
- Skin Care
- PsoriasisPainful dry and cracked skin can develop for many different reasons, including conditions like eczema or psoriasis, or even exposure to harsh soaps, cold weather, or other factors.
- Sports MedicineRegardless of how they happen, sports injuries can grind your game and goals to a temporary halt. The key to recovery is providing an injury the time and care it needs and easing back into activity in ways that won’t cause further and more debilitating damage.
- Physical TherapyBFR is a physical therapy technique used to “simulate†the benefits of high-intensity training for targeted muscle groups while only performing low-load resistance exercise.

- Heel Pain
- Ankle SprainAn ankle sprain is a common injury that can occur when the ankle is rolled outward (inverted). An ankle sprain is a stretching or tearing of the ligaments (tissues that connect the bones). Ankle sprains are often mistaken for ankle fractures because they can cause similar symptoms, such as pain, swelling, and bruising.
- Orthotics and Prosthetic Therapy
- General PodiatryCapital Podiatry Associates has been serving the foot and ankle needs of patients in Northern Virginia, Mount Vernon, Crystal City, and National Landing for more than 30 years.
- Ankle InstabilityIf your ankles are prone to giving way due to a history of ankle sprains, BFR can significantly increase the safety and effectiveness of your rehab.
- Ankle SprainFoot and ankle injuries are another common cause of neuropathy. Other reasons this condition can develop include exposure to toxins, autoimmune diseases, and certain kinds of medication.
- Bunions ProblemsHave you ever heard of a bunion? It’s a foot deformity that occurs when the big toe joint becomes misaligned. According to Cleveland Clinic, “…up to 1 in 3 Americans have bunions. The foot problem is more common in older adults, especially women.â€
- Calluses
- Diabetic Foot CareDiabetic foot care is a very important part of our practice. The effects of diabetes can be especially severe to your feet and toes if problems are left unchecked. Our goals are not only to treat problems that arise, but provide preventative care to keep them from becoming problems in the first place.
- Flat Feet
- Fungus ToenailsToenail fungus will not go away on its own, and it will only get harder to treat if it’s allowed to worsen and spread. Contact us today to get started on treatment.
- HammertoesHammertoes are a common foot condition that can cause intense pain and discomfort. Like other toe deformities, hammertoes can make choosing proper footwear that fits your feet very difficult. Many times people will just end up avoiding footwear altogether because of the pain caused by hammertoes. Hammertoes can cause intense pain even when just walking or standing for long periods.
- Heel SpursMany people don’t even know they have heel spurs, a condition that occurs in approximately 38 percent of the population. Heel spurs are often misunderstood. Several studies have found that people who have heel spurs don’t even experience pain from them.
- Heel PainThe primary goals of heel pain treatment  are to take care of symptoms, accelerate healing when necessary, and prevent conditions that can cause heel pain from coming back.
- Foot Pain
- Ingrown ToenailsThey may seem like a “small†problem at first, but an ingrown toenail can quickly become a major impediment to your daily activities—especially here in the bustling D.C. area, where most people spend a lot of time on their feet.
- Foot Injuries
- MetatarsalgiaMetatarsalgia – Pain in the forefoot or ball of the foot, often as a result of overuse or excess force against the front of the foot.
- Foot WartsFoot warts are caused by a viral infection in the upper layers of skin. If they appear in areas subject to weight-bearing pressure or friction, they can be quite painful. Warts can also easily multiply and spread, and can last several months or even years without treatment, so once again we encourage you to seek treatment as soon as possible.
- Pediatric Foot Care
- Plantar FasciitisYour heels bear your body weight and absorb the shock of your movements day in and day out. For as strong as your joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons are—and how well they work in concert—they naturally break down over time and, therefore, make you susceptible to developing chronic conditions or sustaining injuries that cause mild, moderate, or severe heel pain. One of the most common—and most painful—foot conditions you can develop is called plantar fasciitis.
- Podiatric DeformitiesWe also recognize that community can extend well beyond our neighborhoods and boundaries. That is why we’re also proud to work with the American Podiatric Medical Association and podiatrists throughout the country to provide treatment for children’s foot deformities in other countries.
- Podiatric SurgerySketch of what a typical recovery timeline would look like for a foot surgery. Again, understand that this is just a general average, and individual results can be faster or slower (mostly based on the complexity of the surgery being performed).
