Tips on Vacation Properties

  • Start by visiting the permit office of the town in which you’re building and learn about all of the requirements. There are codes to be met, and you will face an inspection once the project is completed.
  • Make sure you pick a good lot on which to build your vacation properties. If you’re on beachfront property or somewhere equally tantalizing, you’ll probably pay more for the lot than the house. Just be sure the house is built to fit the terrain.
  • Decide how much you want to spend on your home, and then tack on a hefty amount of cushion. Home building projects usually cost more than was planned, and if not then you’ve got some extra savings.
  • Be choosy when picking contractors for vacation properties. Select several candidates, review them all and get quotes to compare. Eliminate anyone who’s too good to be true or who wants money up front and/or in cash. Run, don’t walk, away from somebody demanding a snap decision.
  • Be very specific in your plans for the vacation home, down to every cabinet and power outlet. More importantly, save money by not straying from this plan. However, listen to the builder if he advises against a specific decision. The more details you offer, the more your vision will come to life. However don’t be so inflexible that you end up eschewing sound advice.
  • Think creatively when building vacation properties. Bigger isn’t always better, so think strategically about using your space in a manner where form fits function. For example, is a lot of patio space important to you so that your family can all gather outside?
  • That said, keep things simple where you can. Don’t fall into fads that could be gone when you try to sell the home. Stick with classic trends that will stand the test of time and retain value.
  • Probably the most importantly, make sure your vacation properties can withstand the elements. For example, durable materials are of the utmost importance on the beach, where wind, water and salt will pound the home daily. You should hire a contractor with experience in the type of vacation home you are building.
