When you have a mouse infestation in your home, getting rid of them as fast as possible becomes your first priority. Whether the mice are living in the walls or coming in from outdoors, there are certain steps that homeowners can take to get the mice out of their house.

  1. House mice are attracted to all types of food, like breads, sweet things, meats, and fruits. Stored foods should be kept in tightly sealed glass or plastic containers. Sweep up crumbs immediately and dispose of them.
  2. Cracks or small holes must be sealed to prevent mice from entering the home or traveling easily between rooms. Wire mesh can be used to cover large holes, and aluminum foil can be crushed and inserted into small areas. Unlike paper, plastic, or similar objects, mice cannot chew through metal.
  3. Remove potential nesting spots around the house. Piles of clothing, stacks of papers, and unused furniture can provide hospitable areas for mice to build their nests.
  4. Your home’s outdoor area should be cleaned up as well. Tall grass or an unkempt garden attract mice, as well as other rodents. Once they get comfortable in your yard, it’s only a matter of time before they come into the house.
  5. Conventional spring traps are often very effective at exterminating mice inside the home. They can be baited with peanut butter or bacon and set in areas where mice have been known to forage.
  6. Glue boards also work well to catch mice, but these do not kill them directly. A mouse may die of starvation or stress if not removed promptly, but if you get to it quickly, you have the choice of releasing it into the wild.
  7. Live catch traps work by enticing mice to enter a bowl or other structure from which they cannot escape. These traps will need to be checked at least once each day so that caught mice can be released outdoors.
  8. Mouse bait attracts mice and delivers a fatal dose of poison. While this method of extermination is effective, mice will sometimes die in inaccessible locations – leaving an unpleasant, lingering odor. If other options have failed, it’s probably best to consult a professional exterminator instead of using mouse poison.
  9. With their training and experience exterminating mice, pest control management professionals can often locate holes or openings that a homeowner may overlook. A house mouse can actually squeeze through an opening as small as a dime, and a professional exterminator will take the time needed to locate all of these tiny openings around the home.
  10. Exterminators are also well-equipped to trap all of the mice that enter a home. They will have ready access to multiple traps that they can place throughout the home – under cabinets, behind appliances, in the basement, and in the attic. Their experience has taught them the best places to set traps in order to catch mice as quickly as possible.

As you can see, getting rid of a mouse infestation requires a lot of hard work. Doing a sloppy job means the mice will be back – if they ever leave at all. But if you’re diligent and thorough, it’s definitely possible to get rid of them for good.
